This study has exploited aerial photographs and LiDAR digital elevation model to quantify intertidal complex landforms volume. A first volume estimation of the main sabellariid polychaete reef complex of the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel-France is presented. The Sabellaria alveolata is an engineering species that heavily modifies its environment. This gregarious tube-building annelid forms dense and solid reefs of bioclastic coarse sand which can reach several km 2. Since 1970 a very strong decline of reefs has been observed. The authorities have curbed fishing activities without any noticeable changes in reef health status. The S. alveolata reef volume is estimated to be 132 048 m 3 (96 301 m 3 for Sainte-Anne reef and 35 747 m 3 for Champeaux reef). Further LiDAR data surveys will be needed to be able to understand and quantify the accretion/erosion processes in play in the reef dynamic. Because of the internal variability of topographic complexity of the reef, characterized by crevices, cracks, and holes rather than whole blocks, further studies are needed to calculate more accurately the volume of the reef.

A análise morfodinâmica do sistema costeiro aborda os processos causadores e transformadores de feições morfológicas, bem como as forças geradoras desses processos e seus mecanismos de interação. A grande variabilidade espacial e temporal dos processos morfodinâmicos costeiros e estuarinos é um desafio para o entendimento geral tanto da freqüência quanto da magnitude desses processos, bem como de seu grau de influência no transporte e balanço de sedimentos, na morfologia costeira e nos processos ecológicos. A capacidade de análise sinóptica das imagens de satélite, dados históricos e obtidos in situ, e o potencial de análise espacial do geoprocessamento, foram empregados na identificação e compreensão dos processos morfodinâmicos no Complexo Estuarino de Paranaguá (CEP) e região costeira adjacente. Os processos estuarinos, mais importantes, relacionados ao transporte de sedimentos identificados no CEP foram o aporte de sedimentos fluviais, de escala temporal sazonal e episódica, e a zona de máxima turbidez, a qual é regulada pela maré de sizígia. Nas margens arenosas da desembocadura do CEP, a evolução da linha de costa foi monitorada, entre 1985 e 2000, por oito imagens do satélite Landsat. As alterações morfológicas de maior magnitude observadas estão relacionadas à modificação no padrão anual de ventos, que por sua vez influi no estado de agitação do mar, sendo a intensificação de ventos dos quadrantes sul e sudeste indutora de processos erosivos. Há indícios de que estas alterações no padrão de ventos estejam vinculadas ao momento de inversão entre os eventos El Niño-La Niña. O comportamento das correntes na região costeira foi descrito, e o transporte de sedimentos por tração, estimado. O transporte por tração dos sedimentos de fundo ocorre transversalmente e longitudinalmente à linha de costa. As correntes de maré são as causadoras do transporte transversal à costa, o qual predomina no sentido costa afora. O transporte longitudinal à costa ocorre quase exclusivamente em momentos de intensa energia de ondas e preferencialmente para norte. Três tipos de processos costeiros (pluma estuarina, correntes de retorno e frente de superfície), relacionados a transporte de sedimentos, puderam ser descritos e analisados a partir de uma imagem Landsat-7. O CEP é particularmente vulnerável a eventos de grande energia que nele atuam, principalmente na escala temporal "evento" (dias a meses) e age como um fornecedor de propriedades (sedimentos, nutrientes, poluentes) para a plataforma rasa. *

Abstract. This paper compares the use of biophysical índices and coefficients of variation derived from airborne synthetic aperture radar for discriminating and characterising land cover classes in the Tucurui reservoir. R assumes that the structural and dielectric properties of the land cover classes are sufficiently distinct to permit their discrimination using airborne C -band SAR data ai different polarizations. Analyses of the results show that any of the proposed indices can be used effectively to discriminate among the land cover classes in the Tucurld reservoir. Certain combinations of polarizations and biophysical indices can, however, improve the sapa rability of Lhe land c:over classes.

Coastal ocean observing and modeling systems (coastal observatories), connected with regional and global ocean systems, improve the quality of information and forecasts for effective management of safe and sustainable maritime activities. The public availability of systematic and long-term information of the ocean is an engine for the Blue Economy, boosting economic growth, employment, and innovation. An overview of some Brazilian initiatives is presented in this paper, involving universities, private companies, federal and state agencies, covering institutions from south to north of Brazil. Although these initiatives focus mainly on ocean physics, integrated efforts can extend the scope to include biogeochemistry and marine biodiversity, helping to address interdisciplinary problems. Existing initiatives can be connected, and new ones fostered, to fill in the gaps of temporal and spatial coverage of ocean monitoring in the vast oceanic area under Brazilian jurisdiction (nationally referred to as the Blue Amazon, in reference to the similar richness of the Amazon Forest). The alignment among national and regional initiatives, as well as with international programs, can be promoted if coordinated by a national-level organization, maximizing the return of public investment and socioeconomic benefits. In light of international examples, possible future institutional arrangements are discussed, leveraging from existing national public policies and international cooperation that Brazil is taking part. The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development is a timely opportunity to encourage an institutional arrangement to support and articulate an integrated network of coastal observatories in Brazil.
