In Forschungs-und Entwicklungsprojekten mit E-Learning-Bezug wird gerne Open-Source-Software eingesetzt, weil diese leicht und kostengünstig Anpassungen an spezifische Projektanforderungen erlaubt. Diesem Vorteil an Flexibilität steht jedoch ein gravierender Nachteil gegenüber. Durch das individuelle Anpassen der Software kann diese nicht mehr ohne Weiteres auf neue Versionen aktualisiert werden. Entweder gehen die gemachten Änderungen beim Update verloren. Oder durch die Änderungen werden automatisierte Update-Prozesse blockiert und machen aufwendige manuelle Anpassungen notwendig. Auch wird die Weitergabe von Entwicklungen, die auf der angepassten Software basieren, eingeschränkt. Denn bei anderen Institutionen sind diese spezifischen Softwareanpassungen in der Regel nicht vorhanden. Kompatibilität ist damit nicht gegeben. Vor diesem Dilemma stand zu Projektstart auch das optes-Team. Zwar wurde schon in der Antragsphase entschieden, ILIAS als Lernplattform für verschiedene der geplanten Anwendungsszenarien in optes zu nutzen. 1 Aber gerade bei zentralen Features wie dem Kursmanagement oder dem Test-Tool entstanden in den Teilprojekten schnell Anforderungen, die die bisherigen Versionen von ILIAS nicht erfüllen konnten. Im Hinblick auf den straffen Zeitplan des Projekts sollten diese Anforderungen rasch erfüllt werden, um die gewünschten Prototypen und Piloten zeitnah umsetzen und in der Praxis austesten zu können. Zugleich sollten diese erweiterten ILIAS-Funktionen künftig auch von anderen Anwender*innen verwendet werden können. Denn es war ein erklärtes Ziel des Projekts, entwickelte Angebote den Hochschulen zur Verfügung zu stellen, die nicht zum Projektkonsortium gehören. 2 Damit dieser erweiterte Anwenderkreis die entsprechenden optes-Angebote aber nutzen kann, mussten die Kurse, Tests und anderen Angebote auf einem Standard-ILIAS 3 laufen. ZusammenfassungIm optes-Projekt wurden eine Vielzahl von inhaltlichen Angeboten entwickelt, die zur Durchführung unterschiedliche softwaretechnische Unterstützung brauchen. Aufgebaut wurde zum Beispiel ein Mathematik-Propädeutikum aus thematisch abgestimmten Vorkursen, in denen Lernmodule und Glossare zur Wissensvermittlung und Tests zum Üben und zum Überprüfen des individuellen Lernstands verwendet werden (siehe Kapitel 14). Elektronische Portfolios wurden benötigt, um den Reflexionsprozess der Lernenden zu unterstützen und ihre Kenntnisse und Fähigkeiten im Rahmen des E-Tutoring-Ansatzes zu dokumentieren (siehe Kapitel 5).
