Knowledge of plant nutritional status allows an understanding of the physiological responses of plants to crop fertilization. A hydroponic experiment evaluated the symptoms of macronutrient deficiency in cauliflower ‘Verona’ and determined: a) the macronutrient contents of foliar tissues when visual symptoms were observed, b) macronutrients content of foliar and inflorescence tissues at harvest. The effect of nutrient deficiency on inflorescence mass was also evaluated. Nitrogen deficiency caused chlorosis followed by purple color in the old leaves, while P deficiency caused only chlorosis in old leaves. Chlorosis at the edge of old leaves progressing to the center of the leaves was observed with the omission of K, and after was observed necrosis in the chlorotic areas. Ca deficiency caused tip burn in new leaves, while Mg deficiency caused internerval chlorosis in old leaves. The omission of each macronutrient reduced inflorescence dry matter. This deleterious effect was larger for N, P, and K deficiencies, reducing inflorescence dry matter by 87, 49, and 42%, respectively. When the nutrient solutions without N, P, K, Ca, or Mg were supplied to cauliflower plants, the macronutrient contents at harvest were 8.8, 0.6, 3.5, 13.0, and 0.8 g kg-1 in the foliar tissues and 27.3, 2.2, 21.6, 1.1, and 0.7 g kg-1 in the inflorescence tissues, respectively.
EFFECT OF MECHANICAL INJURIES ON 'AURORA-1' PEACHESABSTRACT -This work aimed to evaluate the effect of mechanical injuries, impact, compression and cut on the postharvest quality of peaches cv. Aurora-1. Impact injury was obtained dropping fruit, twice, from a height of 1.20 m. Compression injury was performed with the fruit submitted to weight (3 kg) for 10 minutes. Cut injury was obtained cutting fruits, three times, in the longitudinal direction. after these treatments the injured fruit and the control (not damage fruit) were stored to 10±1.5 °C and 85±2 % RH for 8 days. The loss of fresh mass, appearance, color and contents of soluble solids (SS), titratable acidity (TA), soluble sugars, pH and firmness were evaluated. Mechanical injuries promoted marks in peaches 'Aurora-1', affecting the appearance that obtained a low score at the sixth day of storage. 'Aurora-1' peaches submitted to impact had greater loss of fresh mass than control, compression and cut. The injured area was darker and colorless than intact areas. This deleterious effect also was verified when the fruit were submitted to impact, when compared with the other treatments. The chemical composition was not affected by the injuries. During the storage there was an increase in SS content and soluble sugars and reduction in TA, resulting in better ratio SS:TA.
The objective of this research was to obtain a mathematical equation to estimate Sida cordifolia and Sida rhombifolia leaf area based on linear measures of leaf blade. Correlation studies were conducted between real leaf area (Af) and dimensional leaf blade parameters such as leaf length (C) and maximum leaf width (L). Around 200 leaf blades of each species were analyzed, collected from several agro-ecosystems at São Paulo State University, in Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil. The statistical models evaluated were: linear Y = a + bx; simple linear Y = bx; geometric Y = ax b ; and exponential Y = ab x . All the evaluated models can be used for S. cordifolia and S. rhombifolia leaf area estimation. For practical purposes, the simple linear regression model is suggested using the C*L multiplication product and taking the linear coefficient equal to zero. Thus, an estimate of S. cordifolia leaf area can be obtained using the equation Af = 0.7878*(C*L) with a determination coefficient of 0.9307 and S. rhombifolia leaf area by using the equation Af = 0.6423*(C*L) with a determination coefficient of 0.9711.
A greenhouse trial was carried out from November 1995 to April 1996 at FCAV/UNESP, Brazil, aiming to study the dry matter production and the accumulation and distribution of macronutrients in Solanum americanum, an important weed for annual and perennial crops in Brazil. The plants were grown in seven liter pots with sand substrate, irrigated daily with Hoagland & Arnon nutrient solution. The experimental design was completely randomized with four replicates. The treatments corresponded to evaluation times at 14 day intervals, beginning 21 days after emergence (DAE). In each evaluation, the plants of four pots were analyzed for dry matter production and macronutrient content. S. americanum had a small dry matter and macronutrient accumulation at the beginning of the experimental stage, increasing after 77 DAE and reaching the maximum theoretical value at 142, 142, 164, 149, 140, 149 and 152 DAE, for dry matter, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and S, respectively. K and N were the most accumulated macronutrients for S. americanum plants.
The intercropping is a production system that aims to provide increased yield with less environmental impact, due to greater efficiency in the use of natural resources and inputs involved in the production process. An experiment was carried out to evaluate the agronomic viability of kale and New Zealand spinach intercropping as a function of the spinach transplanting time. (0, 14, 28, 42, 56, 70, 84 and 98 days after transplanting of the kale). The total yield (TY) and yield per harvest (YH) of the kale in intercropping did not differ from those obtained in monoculture. The spinach TY was influenced by the transplanting time, the earlier the transplanting, the higher the TY. The spinach YH was not influenced by the transplanting time, but rather by the cultivation system. In intercropping, the spinach YH was 13.5% lower than in monoculture. The intercropping was agronomically feasible, since the land use efficiency index, which was not influenced by the transplanting time, had an average value of 1.71, indicating that the intercropping produced 71% more kale and spinach than the same area in monoculture. Competitiveness coefficient, aggressiveness and yield loss values showed that kale is the dominating species and spinach is the dominated.
A greenhouse experiment was carried out from January to June 2008 at FCAV/ UNESP, Brazil, to study dry mass production, absorption rate and macronutrient accumulation in Merremia aegyptia, an important weed in annual and perennial crops in Brazil.
