PrefaceGenerally, the Censuses of Population and Housing, is the most extensive statistical undertaking in any country. Sri Lanka has a statistical history of conducting Population and Housing Censuses since 1871 and incidentally this 1871 Census had been the first Census conducted in a country of the South Asian Region. Thereafter, a series of Census, has been conducted in Sri Lanka. The Department of Census and Statistics was able to conduct the 14 th consecutive Population and Housing Census in Sri Lanka in year 2012. This is a unique event since it is after a period of 3 decades that the Department was able to conduct an island wide Census in a country liberated from terrorism. Thus, it is with a sense of accomplishment that we present this report, filling a 30 year data gap for those affected districts as well as the country when taken in its entirety. Thus the present Census fulfills an imperative the country's planning and research activity has been made to do without during the past 31 years.Further, the Department, in keeping with its role as the primary source of providing comprehensive socio-economic information needed in the country, has deployed new technology, such as scanning and computer assisted coding, to expedite the processing of data.Since population Census is the largest data collection activity in a country, releasing Census information take considerable time due to the series of activities involved in processing data. Therefore, in keeping with international recommendations, information based on a 5% sample is initially released to meet the urgent needs of data users, pending more comprehensive reports. Thus, the current report is based on the data obtained from a scientifically chosen 5% sample of the population, projected to represent the country's entire population. The report provides introduction to Population Census at the beginning and arranged other information under two parts: Part A is on Population and Part B is on Housing. Topics covered under Part A includes, Population distribution and growth, demographic characteristics of the population, fertility, migration, characteristics of population with functional difficulties, education attainments and economic activities. Under Part B, the report discusses the introduction to Housing Census, housing stock and related information, housing characteristics such as type of structures, construction material, household facilities such as sources of drinking water, types of cooking fuel, sanitation, lighting, disposal of waste, communication facilities and access to internet. The report presents data in terms of numbers, percentage distributions or proportions and also uses maps, graphs and tables to facilitate their interpretation. However, the information presented in this volume, though provisional, has been finalized after vigorous checks on quality, consistency and validation. Similarly, finalization of the full data file will provide more detailed information at national and district level and such information will be disseminated, in ...
