Lire et raconter des histoires aux enfants d’école maternelle sont des pratiques devenues courantes, recouvrant des modalités différentes. Il existe une grande disparité dans le choix des albums lus aux élèves, dépendant des objectifs pédagogiques des enseignants. L’article aborde les difficultés de compréhension liées à la complexité des illustrations, des textes ou de leur complémentarité, qui peuvent compromettre la contribution de la narration à la structuration du langage des enfants non encore lecteurs pour préparer leur accès à la littératie. D’où la nécessité d’une formation des enseignants pour les aider à définir leurs objectifs pédagogiques, pour procéder au choix d’ouvrages et aux modalités de leur utilisation, et ainsi anticiper leurs pratiques d’interaction individuelles ou collectives avec les enfants, en fonction des caractéristiques des ouvrages choisis.
