En décembre 1453, Guillaume Adeline, prédicateur et maître en théologie bénédictin, doit comparaître devant l'évêque d'Évreux Guillaume Flocques et le vice-inquisiteur du royaume de France Enguerrand Signard, qui agit au nom de l'inquisiteur général Roland le Cozic : il aurait appartenu à une « synagogue vaudoise ». Celle-ci aurait tenu plusieurs réunions nocturnes en 1438 en Franche-Comté, réunissant jusqu'à un milliard (sic) de personnes. Entré dans cette secte afin de résoudre le conflit qui l'opposait au seigneur de Clairvaux, Adeline y retrouva, selon ses aveux, des hommes et des femmes venus qui par vengeance, qui par goût de la luxure, qui pour boire et manger à satiété. Il rencontra le diable, appelé « Monseigneur », qui lui apparut sous une forme humaine, puis sous la forme d'un bouc dont il embrassa le postérieur-qu'il qualifie de froid, rugueux et dégoûtant-, et prêta serment en reniant Dieu et la foi chrétienne. Accueilli avec allégresse par le chef des démons, il joua un rôle éminent au sein de la secte. Après de tels aveux, il abjure devant ses juges son appartenance à cette damnable secte des vaudois présidée par l'ennemy d'enfer et l'adversaire de l'humain lignage, et reconnaît les crimes qui lui sont reprochés. Condamné à la prison à vie, il meurt quatre ans plus tard au cachot. 2 Cette description ne doit pas nous étonner, même si le cas est encore précoce au nord de la France : il s'agit bien du sabbat des sorcières, tel qu'on le trouve décrit par le juge Claude Tholosan en Dauphiné ou par l'auteur des Errores Gazariorum, ainsi que dans de nombreux procès intentés dans la région des Alpes occidentales depuis une petite quinzaine d'années 1. Le sabbat auquel aurait participé Guillaume Adeline est situé en Franche-Comté en 1438, soit à une période où des accusations similaires commencent à se diffuser de part et d'autre du Jura. Avec ce procès tenu en Normandie, on assiste à l'exportation de l'imaginaire du sabbat vers le nord de la France dès 1450. De quibusdam quoque heresibus, sed et de schismatibus quae in Romana sede contingunt, rédigé après 1485, relate très longuement l'affaire en apportant des éléments inédits sur le procès. En effet, originaire d'Évreux, il a été un témoin privilégié de l'affaire et a recopié la confession d'Adeline ainsi que tous les actes du procès 13 .
