La plaisante allusion de Sextus Pompée à la maison paternelle des Carènes lors de la trêve de 39 av.n.è. (Vell. Pat. II, 77, 1 ; Plut. Ant. 32, 2-4; Flor. II, 18, 4; D.C. 48, 1-3; De vir. ill. 84,3), doit être replacée dans son contexte politique, mise en relation avec l'état d'esprit de la population de Rome et rapprochée de la propagande, notamment numismatique, de S.P. (expression de sa piété filiale et de sa vocation neptunienne) : elle en condense en effet tous les thèmes.
En admettant en outre qu'il s'agit bien de la «maison aux rostres», cette référence à la victoire paternelle sur les pirates s'oppose habilement aux calomnies des triumvirs.
Pour finir, le sort ultérieur de la maison est envisagé dans ses implications politiques.
