The Hansen solubility parameters were determined for three hydrocarbon fluids, equivalent to naphthenic mineral oil of different degrees of refinement. This was done by an indirect method based on the solubility of the hydrocarbon fluids in a system of solvents with known Hansen solubility parameters. It was concluded that the method may serve as a tool to estimate the approximate solubility parameters of naphthenic oil. However, in this study, the accuracy was insufficient to separate naphthenic oil of different degrees of refinement.

The effect of addition of acids, peroxides and model N‐containing compounds to the oils on the rate of the copper dissolution from a copper strip into the oils was studied. The oils used were poly‐alpha‐olefin 2 (PAO‐2) and a highly refined naphthenic oil. Acids and peroxides were found to increase the copper dissolution into the oil, whereas the model nitrogen‐containing compounds exhibited a surface passivatory effect. The presence of the oil's partial oxidation products was found to increase the dissolution of the copper into the oil. The reasons for these observations are discussed. The relative contribution of the electrochemical and chemical processes to the copper corrosion is discussed. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A known principle in which triphenylphosphine is allowed to be oxidized by hydroperoxides to triphenylphosphine oxide, was developed into an analytical method for determination of hydroperoxide content in light mineral oils using GCMSdetection and quantification. By suitable choice of reagent solution solvents and internal standard, the method proved to be simple to apply and very rugged. For a series of oven-aged oil samples the developed method gave results with a satisfactory correlation to an established iodometric method (which also gave a higher standard deviation). A mechanistic explanation for interference of high concentrations of added aldehydes on measurements was also suggested, but it was found that the interference is of no practical consequence for oxidized oil samples.

The Hansen solubility parameters were determined for three commercial organic corrosion inhibitors of surface adsorption type, i.e., benzotriazole, tolyltriazole, and Irgamet 39 (a N-methylamino-substituted triazole). The determination was performed using an indirect method using the solubility of the inhibitors in various solvents. The calculated Hansen solubility parameters of the inhibitors were compared to the Hansen solubility parameters and solubility sphere of refined naphthenic mineral oil. The obtained Hansen solubility parameters of benzotriazole indicate very low solubility in mineral oils, while the solubility of tolyltriazole was slightly higher because of the methyl substitution. For Irgamet 39, full miscibility with refined mineral oil was indicated. The adsorption kinetics of the inhibitors in naphthenic oil were considered and related to the Hansen solubility parameters.
