The study of rotor blade aerodynamic performances of wind turbine has been presented in this thesis. This study was focused on aerodynamic effects changed by blade surface distribution as well as grid solution along the airfoil. The details of numerical calculation from Fluent were described to help predict accurate blade performance for comparison and discussion with available data.The direct surface curvature distribution blade design method for two-dimensional airfoil sections for wind turbine rotors have been discussed with the attentions to Euler equation, velocity diagram and the factors which affect wind turbine performance and applied to design a blade geometry close to an existing wind turbine blade, Eppler387, in order to argue that the blade surface drawn by direct surface curvature distribution blade design method contributes aerodynamic efficiency.The FLUENT calculation of NACA63-215V showed that the aerodynamic characteristics agreed well with the available experimental data at lower angles of attack although it was discontinuities in the surface curvature distributions between 0.7 and 0.8 in x/c. The discontinuities were so small that the blade performance could not be affected.The design of Eppler 387 blade performed to reduce drag force. The discontinuities of surface distribution matched the curve of the pressure coefficients. It was found in the curvature distribution that the leading edge pressure side had difficulties to connect to Bezier curve and also the trailing edge circle was never be tangent to the lines of trailing edge pressure and suction sides due to programming difficulties.

An actuator disc CFD model of the flow through a wind turbine in a diffuser is developed and validated. Further, it is shown theoretically from a 1D analysis that the Betz limit can be exceeded by a factor proportional to the relative increase in mass flow through the rotor induced by the diffuser. The theoretical 1D result is verified by the CFD model.

Three-dimensional and rotational viscous effects on wind turbine blades are investigated by means of a quasi-3D Navier-Stokes model. The governing equations of the model are derived from the 3-D primitive variable Navier-Stokes equations written in cylindrical coordinates in the rotating frame of reference. The latter are integrated along the radial direction and certain assumptions are made for the mean values of the radial derivatives. The validity of these assumptions is cross-checked through fully 3-D Navier-Stokes calculations. The resulting quasi-3D model suggests that three-dimensional and rotational effects be strongly related to the local chord by radii ratio and the twist angle. The equations of the model are numerically integrated by means of a pressure correction algorithm. Both laminar and turbulent flow simulations are performed. The former is used for identifying the physical mechanism associated with the 3-D and rotational effects, while the latter for establishing semiempirical correction laws for the load coefficients, based on 2-D airfoil data. Comparing calculated and measured power curves of a stall controlled wind turbine, it is shown that the suggested correction laws may improve significantly the accuracy of the predictions. Two simple methods for determining the angle of attack (AOA) on a section of a rotor blade are proposed. Both techniques consist of employing the Biot–Savart integral to determine the influence of the bound vorticity on the velocity field. In the first technique, the force distribution along the blade and the velocity at a monitor point in the vicinity of the blade are assumed to be known from experiments or CFD computations. The AOA is determined by subtracting the velocity induced by the bound circulation, determined from the loading, from the velocity at the monitor point. In the second method, the full pressure distribution on the blade is assumed to be known and used to determine the local distribution of circulation along the surface contour of the blade. Using the local distribution of circulation to determine the influence of the bound vorticity enables the velocity monitor points to be located closer to the blade, and thus to determine the AOA with higher accuracy. Data from CFD computations for flows past the Tellus 95 kW wind turbine at different wind speeds are used to test both techniques. Comparisons show that the proposed methods are in good agreement with existing techniques. The advantage of the proposed techniques, as compared with existing techniques, is that they can be used to determine the AOA on rotor blades under general flow conditions (e.g. operations in yaw or with dynamic inflow). This article deals with the atmospheric ice accumulation on wind turbine blades and its effect on the aerodynamic performance and structural response. The role of eight atmospheric and system parameters on the ice accretion profiles was estimated using the 2D ice accumulation software LEWICE Twenty-four hours of icing, with time varying wind speed and atmospheric icing conditions, was simulated on a rotor. Computational fluid dynamics code, FLUENT, was used to estimate the aerodynamic coefficients of the blade after icing. The results were also validated against wind tunnel measurements performed at LM Wind Power using a NACA64618 airfoil. The effects of changes in geometry and surface roughness are considered in the simulation. A blade element momentum code WT-Perf is then used to quantify the degradation in performance curves. The dynamic responses of the wind turbine under normal and iced conditions were simulated with the wind turbine aeroelastic code HAWC2. The results show different behaviors below and above rated wind speeds. In below rated wind speed, for a 5 MW virtual NREL wind turbine, power loss up to 35% is observed, and the rated power is shifted from wind speed of 11 to 19 m s À1 . However, the thrust of the iced rotor in below rated wind speed is smaller than the clean rotor up to 14%, but after rated wind speed, it is up to 40% bigger than the clean rotor. Finally, it is briefly indicated how the results of this paper can be used for condition monitoring and ice detection.

Embedded vortices in turbulent wall-bounded flow over a flat plate, generated by a passive rectangular vane-type vortex generator with variable angle β to the incoming flow in a low-Reynolds-number flow (Re = 2600 based on the inlet grid mesh size L = 0.039 m and free stream velocity U ∞ = 1.0 m s −1 ), have been studied with respect to helical symmetry. The studies were carried out in a low-speed closed-circuit wind tunnel utilizing stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (SPIV). The vortices have been shown to possess helical symmetry, allowing the flow to be described in a simple fashion. Iso-contour maps of axial vorticity revealed a dominant primary vortex and a weaker secondary one for 20 • 6 β 6 40 • . For angles outside this range, the helical symmetry was impaired due to the emergence of additional flow effects. A model describing the flow has been utilized, showing strong concurrence with the measurements, even though the model is decoupled from external flow processes that could perturb the helical symmetry. The pitch, the vortex core size, the circulation and the advection velocity of the vortex all vary linearly with the device angle β. This is important for flow control, since one thereby can determine the axial velocity induced by the helical vortex as well as the swirl redistributing the axial velocity component for a given device angle β. This also simplifies theoretical studies, e.g. to understand and predict the stability of the vortex and to model the flow numerically.
