The aim of this study is to estimate the mean annual power absorption of a selection of eight Wave Energy Converters (WECs) with different working principles. Based on these estimates a set of power performance measures that can be related to costs are derived. These are the absorbed energy per characteristic mass [kWh/kg], per characteristic surface area [MWh/m 2 ], and per root mean square of Power Take Off (PTO) force [kWh/N]. The methodology relies on numerical modelling. For each device, a numerical Wave-to-Wire (W2W) model is built based on the equations of motion. Physical effects are modelled according to the state-of-the-art within hydrodynamic modelling practise. Then, the W2W models are used to calculate the power matrices of each device and the mean annual power absorption at five different representative wave sites along the European Coast, at which the mean level of wave power resource ranges between 15 and 88 kW per metre of wave front. Uncertainties are discussed and estimated for each device.Computed power matrices and results for the mean annual power absorption are assembled in a summary sheet per device. Comparisons of the selected devices show that, despite very different working principles and dimensions, power performance measures vary much less than the mean annual power absorption. With the chosen units, these measures are all shown to be of the order of 1.
Stochastic Dynamics of Marine Structures is a text for students and reference for professionals on the basic theory and methods used for stochastic modelling and analysis of marine structures subjected to environmental loads. The first part of the book provides a detailed introduction to the basic dynamic analysis of structures, serving as a foundation for later chapters on stochastic response analysis. This includes an extensive chapter on the finite element method. A careful introduction to stochastic modelling is provided, which includes the concepts: stochastic process, variance spectrum, random environmental processes, response spectrum, response statistics and short- and long-term extreme value models. The second part of the book offers detailed discussion of limit state design approaches, fatigue design methods, the equations of motion for dynamic structures and numerical solution techniques. The final chapter highlights methods for prediction of extreme values from measured data or data obtained by Monte Carlo simulation.
The question of optimal operation of wave-energy converters has been a key issue since modern research on the topic emerged in the early 1970s, and criteria for maximum wave-energy absorption soon emerged from frequency domain analysis. However, constraints on motions and forces give the need for time-domain modeling, where numerical optimization must be used to exploit the full absorption potential of an installed converter. A heaving, semisubmerged sphere is used to study optimal constrained motion of wave-energy converters. Based on a linear model of the wave-body interactions, a procedure for the optimization of the machinery force is developed and demonstrated. Moreover, a model-predictive controller is defined and tested for irregular sea. It repeatedly solves the optimization problem online in order to compute the optimal constrained machinery force on a receding horizon. The wave excitation force is predicted by use of an augmented Kalman filter based on a damped harmonic oscillator model of the wave process. It is shown how constraints influence the optimal motion of the heaving wave-energy converter, and also how close it is possible to approach previously published theoretical upper bounds. The model-predictive controller is found to perform close to optimum in irregular waves, depending on the quality of the wave force predictions. An absorbed power equal to or larger than 90% of the ideal constrained optimum is achieved for a chosen range of realistic sea states. Under certain circumstances, the optimal wave-energy absorption may be better in irregular waves than for a corresponding regular wave having the same energy period and wave-power level. An argument is presented to explain this observation.
Wave-energy converters of the point-absorbing type (i.e., having small extension compared with the wavelength) are promising for achieving cost reductions and design improvements because of a high power-to-volume ratio and better possibilities for mass production of components and devices as compared with larger converter units. However, their frequency response tends to be narrow banded, which means that the performance in real seas (irregular waves) will be poor unless their motion is actively controlled. Only then the invested equipment can be fully exploited, bringing down the overall energy cost. In this work various control methods for point-absorbing devices are reviewed, and a representative selection of methods is investigated by numerical simulation in irregular waves, based on an idealized example of a heaving semisubmerged sphere. Methods include velocity-proportional control, approximate complex conjugated control, approximate optimal velocity tracking, phase control by latching and clutching, and model-predictive control, all assuming a wave pressure measurement as the only external input to the controller. The methods are applied for a single-degree-of-freedom heaving buoy. Suggestions are given on how to implement the controllers, including how to tune control parameters and handle amplitude constraints. Based on simulation results, comparisons are made on absorbed power, reactive power flow, peak-to-average power ratios, and implementation complexity. Identified strengths and weaknesses of each method are highlighted and explored. It is found that overall improvements in average absorbed power of about 100–330% are achieved for the investigated controllers as compared with a control strategy with velocity-proportional machinery force. One interesting finding is the low peak-to-average ratios resulting from clutching control for wave periods about 1.5 times the resonance period and above.
a b s t r a c tTension leg platform wind turbines (TLPWTs) represent one potential method for accessing offshore wind resources in moderately deep water. Although numerous TLPWT designs have been studied and presented in the literature, there is little consensus regarding optimal design, and little information about the effect of various design variables on structural response. In this study, a wide range of parametric single-column TLPWT designs are analyzed in four different wind-wave conditions using the Simo, Riflex, and AeroDyn tools in a coupled analysis to evaluate platform motions and structural loads on the turbine components and tendons. The results indicate that there is a trade-off between performance in storm conditions, which improves with larger displacement, and cost, which increases approximately linearly with displacement. Motions perpendicular to the incoming wind and waves, especially in the parked configuration, may be critical for TLPWT designs with small displacement. Careful choice of natural period, diameter at the water line, ballast, pretension, and pontoon radius can be used to improve the TLPWT performance in different environmental conditions and water depths.
In this paper, a long-term fatigue damage analysis method for gear tooth root bending in wind turbine's drivetrains is presented. The proposed method is established based on the ISO gear design codes which are basically developed for gears in general applications, not specifically for wind turbine gears. The ISO procedure is adapted and further improved to include the long-term fatigue damage of wind turbine's gears. The load duration distribution (LDD) method is used to obtain the short-term stress cycles from the input load time series of global response analysis. Dynamic loads and load effects in the gearbox are obtained by two dynamic models; a simplified approach and Multi Body Simulation (MBS) method. A good agreement between these two methods is observed. The long-term fatigue damage is then calculated based on the SN-curve approach by considering all short-term damages and the long-term wind speed distribution. Finally, the reliability and service life probability of failure considering load and load effect uncertainties is calculated. The procedure is exemplified by a 5 MW gearbox designed for a pitch controlled, bottom-fixed offshore wind turbine.
Offshore wind turbines on floating platforms will experience larger motions than comparable bottom fixed wind turbinesfor which the majority of industry standard design codes have been developed and validated. In this paper, the effect of a periodic surge motion on the integrated loads and induced velocity on a wind turbine rotor is investigated. Specifically, the performance of blade element momentum theory with a quasisteady wake as well as two widely used engineering dynamic inflow models is evaluated. A moving actuator disc model is used as reference, since the dynamics associated with the wake will be inherently included in the solution of the associated fluid dynamic problem. Through analysis of integrated rotor loads, induced velocities and aerodynamic damping, it is concluded that typical surge motions are sufficiently slow to not affect the wake dynamics predicted by engineering models significantly.
