SUMMARY Specific atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) analogues have been found to have inhibitory activity in vitro in a calmodolin-dependent, human red blood cell membrane Ca 2+ -adeoosine triphosphatase (ATPase) model. Studied at 10"' to 10"' M concentrations, atriopeptin I (residues 127-147 of rat prepro-ANF sequence) and atriopeptin i n (residues 127-150) progressively inhibited Ca A TRIAL natriuretic factor (ANF) has natri-Z A uretic' and blood pre ssure-lowering 2 actions J.Ain intact animals and has also been shown to inhibit the release of renin 3 and aldosterone. 4 The diverse effects of ANF also include stimulation of arginine vasopressin secretion 5 and of renal gluconeogenesis. 6 The mechanisms of ANF actions are incompletely understood, but they are thought to involve enhanced guanylate cyclase activity (e.g., in the kidney) 7 and, perhaps, lowering of intracellular Ca 2+ concentrations. 8 On the other hand, the renal tubular gluconeogenic action of ANF is Ca 2+ -dependent, 6 and gluconeogenesis in the kid-
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
