Resumo Este estudo foi focado na caracterização físico-química das frações granulométricas da escória granulada de alto forno com o objetivo de verificar-se as possíveis aplicações tecnológicas, aumentando a taxa de utilização de escória em diversos setores da indústria. Para tanto, foram analisadas seis amostras de três altos fornos, sendo duas de cada alto forno. Inicialmente, foi realizado um peneiramento composto por oito peneiras, e cada fração granulométrica retida foi separada e maceradas no moinho de argolas. Posteriormente, foram passadas por uma peneira de 75 micrômetros, obtendo, assim, um pó com a mesma granulometria para todas as frações. Este pó foi submetido a uma análise elementar via fluorescências de raios X, identificando a variação de composição química. Verificou-se que as escórias apresentam uma região de composição homogênea quando o diâmetro dos grãos se encontra na faixa de 4800 a 75 micrômetros, que correspondente a 98,5% da massa da escória. Além disso, observa-se que a região heterogênea pode ser aplicada na indústria de vidros e refratários devido a uma composição mais rica de silício e alumínio. Esse estudo aponta de uma forma inovadora que a separação granulométrica qualifica a escória granulada de alto forno para outras demandas das indústrias, agregando valor ao produto.
