• Forestry and wood-processing industry are sectors based on renewable ecological natural resources of wood raw material. Wood mass processing should be based on sustainable development, which involves the economic and social development based on environment preservation. Green logistics, which leads to change in creating the product value, characterizes different possibilities to measure and minimize the ecological impact of logistics activities and puts emphasis on sustainable ecological orientation (Gunasekaran and Spalanzani, 2012). This is mainly waste separation and recycling.European markets, the Slovak economy is directly dependent on, require development of fi elds of industry, which have a certain specifi c position in the market (Bikár and Kmet'ko, 2015). Within the framework of the Slovak economy, this position is undoubtedly held by wood processing and forestry, which is the result of their comparative advantages. Wood processing and forestry of the Slovak Republic are relatively independent of the supply of raw material, and they can always show active balance of the foreign market. Wood processing and forestry, considering the positive state of raw material, good geographical location, and the acceptable energetic demand of wood processing, represent an important part of the Slovak national economy, and suggest good conditions for further development of small and medium enterprises (Sedliačiková et al., 2016).One of the ways how to increase the productivity of the wood processing and forestry industry and enable the increase of export of our production (mainly in wood processing and forestry), is building small and medium enterprises operating in the fi eld of wood processing and forestry via effective allocation of investment costs into production programs, which will increase the utilization of production capacities, lower the material and energetic demands, and enable knowhow in the fi eld of environmental management of small and medium enterprises.Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are a crucial part of economic potential in most countries of the world, and this is not different in the Slovak Republic (Lesáková, 2012). A clear and explicit defi nition of terms "small" and "medium" does not exist. Approaches to defi ning SMEs are, therefore, different from author to author (Vavrová, 2014;Nováková, 2003;Ojurović at al., 2013). Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) represent 99.8 % of all businesses in the EU. Defi ning a SME is essential, as the access to finance and the EU support programs are targeted specifi cally at these enterprises. Small and medium-sized enterprises are defi ned in the European Commission Recommendation 2003/361. The main factors determining whether an enterprise is a SME are: staff headcount, and total turnover or balance sheet. According to the EC recommendation, SMEs represent those enterprises in which the staff headcount is less than 250, whose annual turnover does not exceed 50 million Euros, and/or total balance sheet does not exceed 43 million Euros.
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) make up over 99% of all industrial enterprises in southeast Europe. A similar percentage of SMEs can be found within southeast Europe's wood-processing and furniture manufacturing companies. This research aimed to investigate the current situation in the production management systems of SMEs in wood-processing companies in select Southeast European countries and to suggest possible improvements according to the results. A total of 30 small and medium companies from different countries in the region were surveyed to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of their production management systems. This research aimed to propose a model to create better systems within SMEs in the woodprocessing branch and, therefore, achieve better production and business results. In addition, a total of 10 experts who work with management systems in wood-processing from the examined countries were surveyed with the same purpose. The Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) analysis of experts' opinions showed that the managers in small and medium enterprises for wood-processing and furniture manufacturing should pay the most attention to the conditions of the market, promotion, marketing, range of products, and product quality.
Small and medium enterprises play a key role in the economy of the European Union as the main generators of employment and economic development. According to the offi cial statistics of the EU, about 99.8 % of enterprises are small and medium. In order to be successful, the company needs to harmonize various parameters through strategic planning, preparation, organization and decision making. For the purpose of the research, two questionnaires were used, one for the purposes of descriptive statistics and χ 2 test, and the other for the purpose of AHP data analysis. The χ 2test shows the opinion of surveyed experts and company managers, while the AHP method demonstrates the parameters considered most and least important for the company business. In contrast to the environmentally friendly production, which has shown to have the least signifi cant impact on the management system, the market, promotion and marketing have the most signifi cant impact. According to the results, production and business management model and block diagram were established.
Wood industry is among the most important industrial sectors in Slovenia and Croatia. In both countries, wood sector is a part of the national strategy plans and one of the industrial branches considered national economy boosters. But media coverage of wood industry and furniture manufacturing in Slovenia, as well as in Croatia, is far behind the promotion enjoyed by other industrial branches. This paper will give the current situation in promotional activities of wood sector in Slovenian and Croatian media and demonstrate the existing differences among given countries. Also, it will present some ideas on improving this situation according to media share of other highly profiled industrial branches in some southeastern European countries.
