Unani system of medicine is based on the humoral theory postulated by Hippocrates, according to him the state of body health and disease are regulated by qualitative and quantitative equilibrium of four humours. Amraz-e-Waba is an umbrella term which is used in Unani medicine for all types of epidemics (smallpox, measles, plague, Hameer Saifi, influenza, Nipaha, Ebola, Zika, and 2019 novel coronavirus, etc.) mostly fatal in nature. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a severe acute respiratory infection, and the pathogenesis and clinical features resemble with those of Nazla-e-Wabaiya (influenza) and Zatul Riya (pneumonia) which were well described many years ago in Unani text such as high-grade fever, headache, nausea and vomiting, running nose, dry cough, respiratory distress, alternate and small pulse, asthenia, foul smell from breath, insomnia, frothy stool, syncope, coldness in both upper and lower extremities, etc. The World Health Organization declared COVID-19 as a global emergency pandemic. Unani scholars like Hippocrates (370–460 BC), Galen (130–200 AD), Rhazes (865–925 AD), and Avicenna (980–1037 AD) had described four etiological factors for Amraz-e-Waba viz., change in quality of air, water, Earth, and celestial bodies, accordingly mentioned various preventive measures to be adopted during epidemics such as restriction of movement, isolation or “quarantena”, and fumigation with loban (Styrax benzoin W. G. Craib ex Hartwich.), sandalwood (Santalum album L.), Zafran (Crocus sativus L.), myrtle (Myrtus communis L.), and roses (Rosa damascena Mill.) and use of vinegar (sirka) and antidotes (Tiryaq) as prophylaxis, and avoiding consumption of milk, oil, sweet, meat, and alcohol. This review focuses and elaborates on the concept, prevention, and probable management of COVID-19 in the light of Amraz-e-Waba.

Background and objectives: Gastritis is a painful or inflammatory state of the stomach and the mucosa covering it. The most common cause of gastritis is helicobacter pylorus. It is caused by certain infection, or by the routine use of antiinflammatory painkiller. Unani Physician has identified various medicinal products in classical text indicated for the treatment of gastritis. Therefore, a clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of Unani Formulation in gastritis on scientific parameters. Methods: The study was designed as single blind pilot study on 12 patients of gastritis. Unani Formulation (Amla-2 part, Asl-Us-Soos-2 part, and Badiyan-2part) was given in the form of powder at the dose of 6 g twice a day after meal for the period of 28 days. All the patients of were assessed weekly on subjective parameters (at 0, 7th, 14th , 21th, and 28th day) whereas objective parameters were assessed before and after the treatment. The outcome of intervention was analyzed using appropriate statistical methods. Results: The study effects on subjective parameters like pain in abdomen, epigastric burning, nausea & vomiting and early satiety were found significantly reduced significantly. The objective parameter VAS and 5 PLS was found highly significant when compared before and after with p<0.0001. The results were analyzed after using paired ‘t’ test. Interpretation & Conclusion: The findings about the both parameters (subjective and objective) that the ‘Unani Formulation is effective gastritis and the cure was significant. Safety parameters (SGOT, SGPT, Blood Urea and Serum Creatinine) were remains unchanged. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Unani Formulation is safe and effective in management of gastritis.

Background: Low Back Pain is one of the common conditions encountered in clinical practice. An estimated 65% to 80% of population will experience it during lifetime. As far as the various documented side effects of analgesics and NSAIDs have been concerned, complementary and alternative treatment options have, therefore, gained popularity. In Unani classical literature, Habb-e-Hindi is being indicated for joint’s pain in general and can be evaluated as safe, effective and alternative treatment of LBP.

Methods: This historical control clinical trial testing the superiority of Habb-e-Hindi with Unani formulation used in previous study carried out at NIUM Hospital, Bengaluru. The comparison of the efficacy was made between the test group and historical control group. Primary outcome measures were improvement in LBP (VAS in NRS) and the secondary outcome measures included improvement in QOL (ODI scores and QBPDS scores). Data were analyzed by using Fisher’s Exact/Chi-Square/Repeated measures and One-way ANOVA with Tukey post hoc multiple comparison test for both intergroup and intragroup comparisons.

Results: The test and the control group both equally had significant results. Test drug showed better results (in VAS). LBP associated disability (in ODI) got reduced significantly in control group as compared to the test group. The Significant Disability Change (in QBPDS) was recorded in all 20 patients of the control group as compared to that of the test group where only 4 patients showed significant reduction.

Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the Unani formulations are effective in the treatment of Low back pain.
