De l'utilisation de la pause silencieuse dans le débat politique télévisé. Le cas de François Hollande « Si l'oeil reste rieur, la voix se casse au fil des meetings. […] Alors son débit à la tribune se densifie. Les mots sont ramassés, entrecoupés de longs silences puis à nouveau une rafale explosive, une véritable compression rythmique, la voix saturée prend des harmoniques aigus. » (Le Monde, 4 mai 2012) Ces remarques au sujet de François Hollande, lues dans une tribune publiée par André Manoukian sur le site du Monde, sont révélatrices du fait que la forme du discours est tout aussi importante que le contenu, dans la mesure où la première participe pleinement à la construction d'une image de présidentiable. En outre, ces mêmes phrases sont la preuve de la singularité de l'élocution propre à François Hollande, qui est notamment définie ici par un débit rapide et de longues interruptions. L'objectif de cet article est justement d'étudier le rythme dans le discours de François Hollande, en se focalisant plus particulièrement sur l'utilisation qu'il fait des pauses, et ce afin de comprendre les spécificités de sa parole. Notre hypothèse est que le placement des pauses est loin d'être anodin, dans la mesure où elles contribuent à la structuration et à la mise en lumière de certaines parties du discours. Ces interruptions rythmiques seront étudiées à travers deux débats politiques télévisés en face-à-face.
Cet article analyse l’éthos, tel qu’il s’est révélé dans le débat de l’entre-deux-tours de l’élection présidentielle française de 2012, entre François Hollande et Nicolas Sarkozy. Après avoir défini la notion d’éthos en fonction de l’analyse du discours, de l’analyse des interactions, du discours politique et médiatique, je présente ma méthodologie pour appréhender l’éthos dans son corpus. L’étude du débat se divise en deux catégories : l’image affichée par le locuteur et l’image attribuée par l’interlocuteur, chacune révélant des marqueurs de l’éthos différents. L’analyse s’intéresse à l’éthos dit dans le discours et à l’éthos montré par le discours et par le comportement des interactants. L’objectif est d’expliquer les différentes (dé) constructions que les candidats font de leur propre image et de celle de leur adversaire dans l’échange. On montrera que la gestion de l’image dans ce genre, et plus particulièrement dans ce corpus, est complexe. La forte interactivité implique que l’éthos soit construit par les deux concurrents. Comme il ne reste que deux candidats à l’issue du premier tour, l’éthos se construit en miroir : pendant qu’un candidat tente d’élaborer une image positive de lui-même, l’autre poursuit le but opposé et lui attribue une image négative. L’essentiel est de trouver un juste équilibre entre ces deux dynamiques pour ne pas ternir sa propre image en montrant un comportement trop agressif. Dans ce débat, la gestion de l’image est l’enjeu même de l’échange : elle se doit d’être convaincante aux yeux du public.
RÉSUMÉ L’élection présidentielle française de 2012 a vu émerger un nouveau genre de discours: le débat télévisé de primaires. Ce débat de l'entre-deux tours des primaires socialistes, qui a opposé Martine Aubry et François Hollande le 12 octobre 2011, était inédit à la télévision française. Ce face à face télévisé entre les deux finalistes appartenant à une même formation politique française présente des caractéristiques génériques particulières: s'il s'agit bien d'un échange relevant du genre débat politique télévisé – et plus précisément appartenant à la famille des « débats de l'entre-deux tours » – il est aussi un débat interne à un parti politique visant à élire le candidat de cette formation pour les prochaines élections présidentielles françaises. L'article se propose de poser les jalons de ce nouveau genre, et de montrer ce qu'il apporte à la définition du discours politique médiatique actuel.
