L’accord international sur le nucléaire iranien signé en juillet 2015, qui vise à empêcher l’Iran d’accéder à l’arme nucléaire, est alors jugé historique par l’administration Obama mais pas assez strict par le gouvernement israélien. Également critiqué aux États-Unis par l’opposition républicaine, il est soumis à un vote de blocage au Congrès en septembre 2015. Les groupes de pression juifs américains prennent position pour ou contre l’accord et mènent des campagnes de lobbying pour ou contre son adoption au Congrès. Les organisations de l’establishment comme l’AIPAC et l’AJC et d’autres groupes conservateurs comme The Israel Project cherchent à convaincre les élus de voter contre l’accord, tandis que les organisations progressistes telles que J Street et l’Americans for Peace Now militent pour le faire adopter – montrant ainsi le clivage de ces groupes. Finalement, le Congrès entérine le passage de l’accord. Ce vote s’explique largement par l’influence de Barack Obama sur les élus démocrates mais marque aussi une défaite et une baisse d’influence – relative – des groupes juifs pro-israéliens de l’establishment et un succès des groupes plus récents – succès tout aussi relatif, d’autant que le successeur d’Obama à la Maison blanche, Donald Trump, fera sortir son pays de l’accord en mai 2018.
