La question de la parentalité dans les contextes de séparation conjugale et de recomposition familiale est indissociablement liée à celle de la coparentalité. La relation coparentale réfère à la façon dont les parents se coordonnent et se soutiennent dans leurs rôles de parent. Après la séparation conjugale, les parents ont pour défis de renégocier des frontières claires entre les rôles conjugal et coparental et de gérer les réorganisations familiales subséquentes. L’objectif de notre étude est d’examiner les effets de différents facteurs (la relation post-conjugale entre les parents, l’arrivée d’un nouveau partenaire conjugal) sur la dynamique de la relation coparentale entre les parents séparés. Le recueil des données a été réalisé auprès de 80 parents d’enfants âgés entre 3 ans et demi et 12 ans, par l’intermédiaire de plusieurs questionnaires auto-administrés. Les principaux résultats montrent que la relation post-conjugale est liée à la qualité de la relation coparentale. La discussion aborde les enjeux liés à la relation coparentale au regard du développement de l’enfant dans ces contextes familiaux spécifiques.
La relation coparentale entre parents d’origine est un sujet abordé par un grand nombre d’auteurs depuis les années 80. Bien que plusieurs chercheurs aient mis en évidence des dimensions sensiblement différentes, une définition consensuelle de la coparentalité a émergé. Il s’agit du partenariat entre deux adultes centrés sur l’éducation et le bien-être de l’enfant. La communauté scientifique s’accorde à dire que la relation coparentale est un concept multidimensionnel. Qu’elle soit étudiée auprès de couples de parents unis ou séparés, l’ensemble des auteurs reconnaît que les dimensions de soutien et de conflit sont centrales. La famille recomposée réunit un parent ayant eu un enfant d’une précédente union et son nouveau conjoint : le beau-parent. L’arrivée du beau-parent entraîne potentiellement une relation coparentale dans le couple recomposé. Cependant, cette relation est encore très peu étudiée dans la littérature. Quelques travaux abordant cette thématique commencent à émerger et permettent de mieux comprendre la coparentalité en situation de recomposition familiale. Pour autant, ils ne permettent pas de définir en quoi la relation coparentale du couple recomposé est similaire ou différente de celle des parents d’origine. Ces travaux seront présentés et discutés dans cet article.
