In Western Bahia, one of the most active agricultural frontiers of the world, cropland area and irrigated area are increasing at fast rates, and water conflicts have been happening at least since 2010. This study makes a hydroclimatic analysis of the water resources in Western Bahia, from both supply and demand viewpoints. Time series of precipitation for the period 1980–2015 and river discharge for the period 1978–2015 are analyzed, indicating a significant reduction of up to 12% in rainfall since the 1980s, and a reduction in river discharge in all stations studied, in both the rainy season and the dry season. Combined with that, irrigated area has increased over 150-fold in 30 years, and in the most irrigated regions, has increased by 90% in the last eight years only. Seven regions in Western Bahia have been identified where the potential for water use conflicts is critical. Moreover, the combination of reduced availability and increased demand of water resources indicates that, if current trends are maintained, conflicts over water may become more frequent in the next years or decades. A short-term alternative to avoid such conflicts is to largely avoid irrigation during the months with low discharge. However, a monitoring system in which the availability and demand of water resources for irrigation are actually measured and monitored, is the safest path to provide water security to this region.
-Body size is hypothesized to play a major role in animal foraging, particularly in pollinators. In general, species with larger bodies forage over greater distances. Studies have found support for this body size-foraging range hypothesis across a wide variety of pollinator species, but have not investigated the possibility that this effect also applies within a pollinator species. We trained foragers of the stingless bee Melipona mandacaia to feeders in their native habitat under natural conditions, and found that larger foragers forage at and recruit to significantly greater distances than smaller foragers. The maximum foraging and recruitment distances are significantly greater (by 24% and 48% respectively) for larger as compared to smaller foragers. We also provide the first direct evidence that stingless bees can forage in their native habitat at distances up to 2.1 km and recruit over 1 km from their nest, recruiting more than 230% farther than previously reported for any stingless bee feeder experiments. Natural size variation among colonies within the same species may play a role in foraging range, and could thus influence plant gene flow and population structure. stingless bees / foraging range / body size / recruitment / size variation
Several recent studies suggest that the level of generalization (measured as percentage connectance) of plantpollinator networks has several ecological correlates, e.g. latitude and altitude. Here we report on levels of generalization in 27 two-mode networks of social bees and their food plants in various Brazilian habitats and urban environments. Social bees are generalist foragers and are among the most abundant flower visitors in Brazil. They probably account for 30-50% of all plant -flower visitor interactions. Connectance was significantly influenced by habitat. Cerrado forests showed lower connectance than the dry dune habitats, with Atlantic rain forest and urban sites taking intermediate position and arid Caatinga being similar to dunes. This shows that generalization in a plant -flower visitor community can be influenced by habitat even within a group of generalist flower visitors, in our case social bees. We show that the strength of the interactions is not different between Cerrado and semi-arid habitats (dunes and Caatinga) and discuss other explanations for our findings.Key words: Pollination, stingless bees, Meliponini, Apis, Bombus, food plants. Palavras
The species richness, abundance, nesting sites, spatial distribution pattern, density of available substrates and substrates used for nesting by Partamona species were studied in a restricted area of a tropical dry forest/ woodlands ecosystem called "arboreal caatinga" in Milagres, Bahia State, Brazil. Two species of the genus Partamona, occurred in the studied area, Partamona rustica (94.1%) and Partamona cupira (5.9%), both nested in arboreal termites nests of the Constrictotermes cyphergaster species. Other three species of arboreal termites' nests occurred in the area (Nasutitermes corniger, Nasutitermes macrocephalus and Microcerotermes sp.). The arboreal termites had nested mainly in "umburana" (Commiphora lepthophloeos). The nesting strategy of Partamona species consist in occupying preexisting cavities opened in arboreal termites nested by a parakeet called "jandaia" (Aratinga cactorum), for reproduction. After the birth of the younglings, the cavity is abandoned and after that a colony of Partamona bees occupies it and starts its nest construction, isolating it with mud and resin. Frequently these cavities are occupied by other inquilines.
-(Spatio-temporal dynamics of Melocactus ernestii subsp. ernestii (Cactaceae) in northwestern Brazil): Melocactus ernestii Vaupel ssp. ernestii occurs in discontinuous outcrops in eastern Brazil. We investigated the spatio-temporal pattern of mortality events and survival of seedlings of M. ernestii relationship with plants and perennials, from the use of plots, assigned with the aid of measuring tapes, which were taken the Cartesian coordinates of the centroid of the stages of development, with subsequent analysis of point patterns based on Ripley's K function. Were mapped in plots 686 individuals of M. ernestii. The spatial pattern varied depending on the scale of the development stage and degree of weathering of the outcrops. The recruitment events and mortality were spatially structured and influenced by seasonal pulses of rainfall. Seedlings emerged ca. 50 cm from the centroid of adults. From the 136 seedlings monitored for 18 months, 84% died. The results showed that microsites initially effective in the maintenance of seed germination may not be effective in the establishment of seedlings. The magnitude of biotic interactions in stressful environments is species-specific and indicates that a positive association between adult plants and seedling survival is not consistent over time. This type of modeling population allows a better understanding of the role of positive and negative interactions as forces community structure, and may help to understand the complexity of biotic interactions in severe environmental gradients.Key words -independent labeling model, recruitment, Ripley's K function, spatial structure RESUMO -(Dinâmica espaço-temporal de Melocactus ernestii subsp. ernestii (Cactaceae) no Nordeste do Brasil) Melocactus ernestii Vaupel subsp. ernestii ocorre em afloramentos rochosos descontínuos no leste do Brasil.
Western Bahia, Brazil, is a classic example of a region where intense irrigation growth has led to acute water stress situations in a few small basins. The water stress problem has the potential to grow regionally. However, there are currently no systematic field measurements of water withdrawn from rivers or groundwater to supply irrigation systems. In this work, we merge remote sensing and river gauge data to assess both the amount of water used for irrigation in Western Bahia and also its consequences for regional water stress, identifying water conflict situations and assessing water security. Remote sensing products used include time series of the normalized difference vegetation index, evapotranspiration, and rainfall. Field data include time series of river discharge and calibration data for crop status and actual evapotranspiration. From calibrated remote sensing products, three-day water balances were calculated for each center pivot using computations of irrigation depth and water uptake for irrigation, both individually at the center-pivot scale and integrated regionally. From these regional integrations, a simple water-use diagnostic indicated that three sub-basins presented the most critical conditions for water conflicts. An in-depth analysis of these sub-basins shows that, despite the high water stress, water use for irrigation has been steadily increasing, pushing the water use to its limits. This work demonstrates that the use of remote sensing products together with field data is a powerful tool for diagnosing water conflict situations. The limitations of this work relate to the absence of field data to validate the water uptake estimated and to the lack of additional long-term and high-quality river flow stations to provide diagnostics for all small basins in the region.
