AbstractCalorific Power estimate and characterization of residues from harvesting and processing of Pinus taeda for energy purposes. This study aimed to evaluate, by characterization, the use of forest and woody residues for energy purposes. The material was collected from a company engaged in wood harvesting and processing of Pinus taeda L., the sources of waste processing have been identified and then it was collect the materials, as well as the residues from forest harvesting. The residues were characterized according to moisture, calorific value, density and levels that fixed carbon and ash. It was done a mathematical adjustment of models that could express the relation between moisture and caloric value for the materials. The slabs and crop residues presented high levels of humidity and the slabs had higher density and higher fixed carbon content. The ash content was statistically equal for all materials. The calorific value was between 4550 and 4950 kcal/kg; the useful calorific value for slabs and crop residues revealed an important decrease caused by high moisture content of these materials. The model of regression selected could express in more than 97% the relation between caloric value and of moisture content. Keywords: Forest residues; energetic use; moisture content.
Evaluation of potential use of the wood of Schizolobium amazonicum "Paricá" and Cecropia hololeuca "Embaúba" to particleboard manufacture ABSTRACT This research was developed to evaluate the potential use of the woods Schizolobium amazonicum (Paricá) and Cecropia hololeuca (Embaúba) for manufacturing particleboard. Were made panels with the densities of 0.70 g/cm³, using mixtures of urea-formaldehyde resin and wood particles of Paricá and Embaúba, in proportions of 75, 50 and 25%. The Pinus taeda wood was used as the reference. The panels were pressed at the temperature of 160ºC, pressure of 40 kgf/cm², for 8 minutes. The evaluations of the properties of water absorption, thickness swelling, internal bond, modulus of elasticity and modulus of ruptures, showed that the woods of Schizolobium amazonicum (Paricá) e Cecropia hololeuca (Embaúba) are technically feasible for particleboard manufacture.
The use of forest biomass or its derived charcoal as firewood can generate environmental and economic advantages for the Brazilian energy matrix. In this context, the main objective was to evaluate the energy potential of certain eucalyptus genetic materials, which are used by the charcoal production sector. We have evaluated six materials of Eucalyptus ssp. at the age of seven years from commercial plantations, spaced 3 x 3m, grown in the Alto Vale do Jequitinhonha, in Minas Gerais. Based on the production data, the average annual increment and the physical and chemical analyzes of the wood and the charcoal produced with it, we have estimated parameters to compare the potential of each genetic material, such as mass and energy of wood and charcoal per hectare, as well as the energy density. The results show that a material of Eucalyptus urophylla has greater energetic potential in relation to the others because it presents higher energy/ hectare estimated for its wood and consequently for charcoal produced with it. However, a material of Eucalyptus cloeziana presented a higher energetic density of the wood and its charcoal, showing advantages mainly in the transport.
The post-pruning growth of the 16 main species planted in urban afforestation in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte was evaluated in order to adjust the pruning regime, as well as to evaluate the effect of environmental, management, and tree factors on shoot development. Six individuals were selected per species, and the monthly growth of the five largest shoots at the pruned points was monitored to create two scenarios, considering the median and third quartile of the growth data. The grouping analysis of the growth data was carried out, defining groups of pruning regime according to the similarity in the species growth. Correlation and linear regression analyses were also performed for climatic factors, pruning intensity, diameter at breast height (DBH), phytosanitary status, luminosity in the crown, and permeable area in the soil. It was verified that the arboreal species studied presented a differentiated growth response of post-pruning shoots and can be combined into groups of pruning management regimes ranging from 6 to 24 months. Environmental, individual, and management factors can affect tree sprouting.
