L’étude de l’émergence et de la diffusion des réseaux de télécommunications représente un axe de recherche de plus en plus prisé par les géographes. Le World Wide Web ne fait pas exception, et son immatérialité ne présente pas un frein à la pensée géographique même si celle-ci s’est plus souvent attachée à étudier les infrastructures des réseaux. Ainsi, la recherche géographique permet de nuancer le discours largement répandu selon lequel Internet marquerait l’abolition des différences régionales. En posant la question de l’ancrage territorial d’Internet, cet article vise à déceler les modalités de la persistance des inégalités territoriales sur le web : inégalités perceptibles à deux niveaux (représentations cartographiques et analyse de contenu pour constitu).
Résumé Cet article propose une lecture géographique de la diffusion d’une innovation, Internet, en s’intéressant à la propagation des sites web dans les lieux et dans les secteurs d’activités économiques des villes corses. Cette double facette dans la diffusion des sites est ici mesurée en mettant à jour sa singularité en Corse où les dynamiques spatiales et sectorielles virtuelles se distinguent de celles mises à jour dans les régions continentales du Languedoc-Roussillon et de Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. L’objectif de ce travail est de montrer que les sites web peuvent être appréhendés comme de véritables « objets géographiques», marqueurs de l’espace et des territoires, de leurs caractéristiques et de leurs dynamiques, et qu’à ce titre l’insularité détient une inscription particulière dans cet espace virtuel.
