Cette étude visait à déterminer si la régulation émotionnelle et l’empathie de l’enfant revêtent une fonction médiatrice entre le rejet maternel et les comportements de l’enfant. Des données ont été recueillies auprès d’un échantillon de 103 dyades mères-enfants (49 garçons et 54 filles âgés de 6 à 13 ans) recrutées dans trois écoles primaires et issues de familles majoritairement francophones. Les enfants et leur mère ont rempli des questionnaires afin de documenter le rejet et l’acceptation maternelle perçus par les enfants, leur régulation émotionnelle, leur empathie et leurs comportements prosociaux et antisociaux. Quatre modèles de médiation ont été testés par l’entremise du programme PROCESS (Hayes, 2013). Une technique de ré-échantillonnage à 10000 itérations a permis de déterminer que le rejet maternel était indirectement lié aux comportements prosociaux et antisociaux des enfants par l’entremise de la manière dont ils gèrent leurs émotions. En revanche, le rejet maternel n’apparaît pas indirectement lié aux comportements des enfants par l’entremise de leur empathie. Des études ultérieures utilisant un échantillon plus large et une mesure plus concrète de l’empathie sont nécessaires.
Cette étude s’intéresse à la relation entre le rejet maternel, comme forme de maltraitance psychologique, et le succès scolaire des enfants. Plus précisément, l’étude vise à déterminer si la régulation des émotions ou les problèmes de comportement agissent comme médiateurs du lien entre le rejet parental et le succès scolaire. L’échantillon d’enfants (N = 189) a été recruté au sein de trois écoles primaires francophones de la grande région de Montréal. Les enfants ont rempli des questionnaires afin de mesurer le rejet maternel perçu, leur régulation émotionnelle et leurs comportements prosociaux et antisociaux. Le succès scolaire a été mesuré en combinant les notes de fin d’année scolaire en français et en mathématiques. Dans le but de tester l’hypothèse d’un modèle médiateur, l’effet indirect du rejet sur le succès scolaire par l’entremise de la régulation émotionnelle et des comportements a été estimé grâce à l’outil statistique « PROCESS » (Hayes, 2013). Les résultats montrent que la régulation émotionnelle agit en tant que médiateur de ce lien. Toutefois, les comportements prosociaux et antisociaux n’agissent pas en tant que médiateurs du lien entre le rejet maternel et le succès scolaire. Ce résultat suggère donc que la régulation émotionnelle contribue à expliquer le processus par lequel les enfants qui ressentent le plus le rejet maternel réussissent moins bien à l’école. Ainsi, améliorer la capacité de régulation des émotions chez les enfants qui se sentent rejetés pourrait réduire leur vulnérabilité sur le plan de la réussite scolaire.
Les symptômes anxieux génèrent d’importantes difficultés à court, moyen et long terme, et ce, sur les plans interpersonnel, scolaire et récréatif, chez les jeunes. Le rejet parental est un facteur de risque au développement de ces symptômes à l’adolescence, période lors de laquelle les relations avec les pairs gagnent en importance. Cette étude vise à vérifier le possible effet modérateur de l’acceptation sociale et de la popularité auprès des pairs sur le lien entre le rejet parental et les symptômes d’anxiété. Des analyses de régression avec modération ont été réalisées sur un échantillon composé de 212 filles et 116 garçons (âge moyen = 15,79 ans) suivis sur deux années scolaires consécutives. Les résultats montrent que la perception de rejet parental est associée aux symptômes anxieux des adolescentes et des adolescents. De plus, un effet d’interaction révèle que la perception de rejet parental est associée à une augmentation des symptômes d’anxiété chez les jeunes qui ont un niveau élevé de popularité, alors que ce n’est pas le cas chez ceux moyennement ou faiblement populaires. Le modèle d’interaction incluant l’acceptation sociale comme modérateur a également été testé, le terme d’interaction s’étant avéré non significatif. Nous discutons de l’estime de soi en tant que variable susceptible d’être impliquée dans les mécanismes menant à la popularité à titre de facteur de risque s’ajoutant aux effets délétères du rejet parental. Les retombées cliniques en milieu scolaire des résultats trouvés seront discutées.
