L'histoire du mezzogiorno italien a été très longtemps étudiée au travers du prisme du méridionalisme. Depuis les années 1970, un profond renouveau historiographique permet de connaître le Mezzogiorno réel, au-delà de sa représentation/déformation par les méridionalistes. Ce renouveau a été particulièrement important pour l'histoire de la Sicile. La représentation d'une Sicile intemporelle et immobile, où «l'histoire est quasi pétrifiée dans la nature» (Giarrizzo) est encore très vivace dans les esprits. L'idéologie sicilianiste au service du baronnage a su créer l'illusion d'une particularité irréductible de l'île. Quant aux écrivains siciliens des XIXe et XXe siècles, ils ont beaucoup contribué à diffuser l'image de la Sicile comme terre de non-histoire ou du moins comme terre marquée par une histoire difficile, spéciale et différente. Depuis plus de vingt ans, une nouvelle génération d'historiens tord le cou à ce stéréotype de la Sicile où depuis l'Unité tout aurait changé pour que rien ne change.
Dans quelle mesure les lois antisémites adoptées en Italie en 1938 s’inscrivaient-elles dans la continuité du racisme colonial institutionnalisé en Éthiopie,deux ans plus tôt? Le lien entre les deux épisodes a souvent été mentionné sans que l’on comprenne toujours s’il était de l’ordre de la généalogie de la causalité – une politique en ayant induit une autre –, de l’analogie ou du champ d’expérience. Après un examen de l’historiographie, une analyse comparée des discours et des pratiques de stigmatisation est esquissée.Racisme colonial et antisémitisme s’inscrivaient dans des traditions culturelles différentes et engendrèrent des systèmes de persécution en partie dissemblables.Il n’en reste pas moins qu’une logique politique commune fut à l’œuvre visant à imposer l’ordre totalitaire fasciste, à transformer le caractère des Italiens et à forger l’homme nouveau fasciste.
