ResumoA imagem social do cirurgião-dentista e da odontologia está associada a experiências de dor e desconforto, despertando sentimentos negativos como medo, aversão e ansiedade. Considerando que a cooperação da criança pode ser influenciada pela relação que esta estabelece com o dentista, o objetivo deste estudo exploratório foi analisar a visão que crianças provenientes de centros de educação infantil têm acerca do cirurgião-dentista e de suas atribuições. Trata-se de um estudo qualitativo desenvolvido com crianças de 4 a 6 anos matriculadas em 4 instituições municipais de Salvador, Bahia.A coleta dos dados foi feita por meio de desenho direcionado, seguido de explanação verbal do seu conteúdo. A imagem do cirurgião-dentista foi representada positivamente, sendo os poucos casos de visão negativa identificados entre as crianças das instituições sem programa regular de promoção da saúde bucal. As ações coletivas foram mais evidentes entre as crianças das instituições com programa regular. Conclui-se que a visão negativa do dentista, culturalmente difundida em nossa sociedade, pode transformarse na medida em que ações de promoção da saúde bucal sejam introduzidas no cotidiano das crianças, uma vez que os centros de educação infantil são espaços sociais privilegiados para o desenvolvimento dessas ações.Palavras-chave: Saúde bucal. AbstractThe social image of dentists and dentistry is associated with experiences of pain and discomfort arousing negative feelings such as fear, anxiety and aversion. Whereas cooperation of the child may be influenced by the relationship it establishes with the dentist, the objective of this exploratory study was to analyze the vision that children from early childhood centers have about dentists and their assignments. This is a qualitative study developed with children 4-6 years old enrolled in 4 municipal institutions of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Data collection was done through directed design, followed by verbal explanation of its contents. The image of the dentist was represented positively, and the few cases of negative vision identified among children in institutions without regular program of oral health promotion. The class actions were more evident among children of institutions with regular program. We conclude that the negative vision of the dentist, culturally pervasive in our society, can become the extent that shares of oral health promotion are introduced in the daily lives of children, so that the early childhood education centers are social spaces privileged to the development of these actions. As práticas de autocuidado são fundamentais para a manutenção da saúde bucal. Conhecer como elas estão inseridas na população favorece o planejamento de ações educativas e preventivas mais eficazes. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a associação entre o perfil sociodemográfico e as práticas de saúde bucal de usuários do Programa Saúde da Família de um município de médio porte do estado da Bahia, Brasil. Trata-se de estudo transversal, realizado por meio de inquérito epidemiológico domiciliar com amostra de 475 usuários. Os resultados mostraram que a maioria foi do sexo feminino, entre 20 e 59 anos, e de etnia parda e negra. A média de renda familiar foi de 791,46 reais e a de escolaridade foi de 7,4 anos de estudo. A escovação, o uso do fio e do palito foram as práticas de autocuidado mais frequentes (55,8%, 59,1% e 54,9%, respectivamente). O uso de bochecho foi relatado por 16,1% dos usuários. Aqueles com maior escolaridade e mais jovens escovavam os dentes mais vezes ao dia e usavam mais o fio dental. O palito dental foi o menos utilizado por aqueles de maior escolaridade e entre mais jovens de 15-19 anos. Concluiu-se que quanto maior o nível de escolaridade e entre os adultos jovens, melhores são os hábitos de higiene oral. Palavras-chave: Práticas de saúde bucal. Perfil de saúde.
