De acuerdo a nuevos y antiguos documentos se concluye que el terremoto de 1730 en Chile estuvo compuesto por dos sismos independientes, cada uno con un tsunami asociado. Considerando la extensión latitudinal de los daños y el tamaño de los tsunamis, este puede ser calificado como el mayor evento sísmico ocurrido en la historia de Chile metropolitano o central. Estas conclusiones permiten conocer mejor la secuencia sísmica del centro de Chile, la historia sísmica del país, y contribuye al conocimiento de la historia colonial del reino de Chile.
Se estudia la fortuna de la mezquita de Córdoba entre los arquitectos neoárabes de finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, proponiendo un periplo de formas que, partiendo de la Exposición Colombina de Chicago del año 1893, germinaron con cierto éxito en La Habana, Lima y, finalmente, en Chile. Se remarca la importancia de este fenómeno de reinterpretación historicista, menos investigado, frente a la omnipresencia del alhambrismo. Finalmente, se publican datos inéditos y material gráfico sobre estructuras neoárabes chilenas, hasta ahora nunca o escasamente analizados.
En el territorio del virreinato del Perú, la independencia política respecto de España terminó de completarse militarmente con la rendición de la fortaleza del Callao, el 15 de enero de 1826 y el mismo día, pero a 3 500 km de distancia, con la de Chiloé, una provincia archipielágica por entonces de cerca de 36 000 habitantes, casi la mitad de ellos indígenas, y 9 000 km2. A la plaza y a la provincia se les ha llamado «últimos reductos españoles en América» (Fernández, 1992). Se habla de «último reducto», de «bastión español», de «baluarte». El historiador Diego Barros Arana estudió tempranamente, en 1856, la singularidad de Chiloé por su tardía incorporación a la naciente república de Chile. Su libro Las campañas de Chiloé, 1820-1826 trata la gesta «patriota» para lograr la anexión del archipiélago, y describe las 3 campañas militares enviadas desde Santiago con dicho objetivo, en 1820, 1824 y 1826, dirigidas a extirparle su condición de baluarte.
1MARíA XIMENA URbINA CARRASCO * RESUMEN En este trabajo se muestran conclusiones de una investigación relativa a la experiencia del hombre en su interacción con el territorio. Se trata de la manera hispano-indígena de navegar y transitar por los archipiélagos, fiordos y canales de la actual región de Aysén, en el período Colonial, centrando la atención en el cruce terrestre por el istmo de Ofqui, en la península de Tres Montes, Patagonia Occidental Insular. Este istmo y la península interrumpen la conexión de los brazos de mar -el océano Pacífico -en dicha costa. La importancia de abordar un tema de esta naturaleza radica en, por una parte, conocer e investigar las formas indígenas de comunicación y tránsito por un territorio, con una cultura material e inmaterial asociada a ellas; y por otra parte, el cómo los españoles en América adoptaron (y modificaron) las maneras indígenas de apropiarse de un paisaje. Dalcas, indios guías, prácticos, remeros, carpinteros de ribera e indias buzas, son oficios y maneras de los grupos canoeros australes empleadas por los españoles de Chiloé para transitar por un ámbito tan distinto a las geografías terrestres, fluviales o marítimas conocidas. En Chiloé el español tuvo que adaptarse a una cultura indígena bordemarina y de la madera, con ausencia de metal y con mar tempestuoso hacia el sur 2 .
