Resistin is a protein composed of 108 amino acids that is named after its supposed effect on the induction of insulin resistance in mice. It has a very important role as a regulator of adipogenesis, whereby it acts on adipose tissue. Associated with obesity, it is also known to participate in different metabolic processes, besides acting as a proinflammatory factor promoting the production of inflammatory cytokines and increasing the expression of cellular adhesion molecules. High levels of resistin have been associated with chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease, significantly influencing the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis and endothelial cell damage. On the other hand, there are studies that support a role of resistin, not yet well known, with proangiogenic, antiapoptotic and even metastatic effects that could contribute to the appearance of different types of cancer, many of them related to obesity.
Vaccines against Covid-19 were developed on the basis of protein S, before it had the mutations identified in these variants. Although research conducted so far is less effective against variants and continues to offer protection against severe forms of Covid-19, further research is ongoing. WHO is working with every country in the world to help coordinate the key stages of this vaccine manufacturing and development process. In particular, to facilitate equitable access for all countries to vaccines against Covid-19 and that they are safe and effective for the billions of people who need them.
Ebola hemorrhagic fever disease affects humans and primates; and is produced by five ebola virus of the Filoviridae family: Zaire virus, Sudan, Bundibugyo, Ivory Coast (Taï forest virus) and Reston. The disease has a high mortality rate, ranging from 25% to 90% of those infected with the virus. During 2014, more than 10,000 suspected cases and numerous deaths have been reported. The virus can be acquired by coming into contact with blood or other body fluids of an infected human or other animal. The symptoms begin 2 to 21 days after contracting the virus, with fever, sore throat, muscle pain and headaches. They are followed by vomiting, diarrhea, rashes, impaired liver and kidney function and subsequently, bleeding.Outbreak control requires community participation, case management, surveillance and follow-up of contacts, appropriate laboratory services and adequate treatment of remains through cremation or burial. There is no specific treatment for the disease. In laboratories where, diagnostic tests are carried out, level 4 containment biosecurity is required. Forced isolation (or quarantine) and contact tracking are considered important to contain an outbreak.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
