With the establishment of the European higher education area (EHEA), the ethical learning of students is a matter of central importance in European universities. This paper examines the current state of ethical learning of students in the Spanish university system. We present the results of a descriptive survey, which used a training model for university students and examined their ethical development in three categories: the construction of self, learning in fellowship and socio-moral reflection. The results of the survey reflect the current situation of ethical training among Spanish students and enable us to propose certain measures for consolidating and enhancing ethical development with the Spanish universities of the EHEA.
Permissive hypercapnia due to inhaled CO2 increases oxygen-carrying capacity in dogs. The PaO2 remains at normal range even at a PiCO2 of 75 torr (10 kPa). The benefits of these effects during permissive hypercapnia, due to controlled hypoventilation, warrants investigation.
This article presents the results of a research aimed at analysing the motivations and academic satisfaction in the transition to master's studies in Social and Legal Sciences. 453 students from 8 master's degrees from the University of Barcelona and Autonomous University of Barcelona have participated. The results show differences between the typology of master and reasons for choice and satisfaction with studies and the relationship between academic satisfaction and the motives of choice. The specifi city of the transition processes to these studies and the importance of establishing guiding actions are confi rmed.
The use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) has extended to all contexts of our lives in the last few years, modifying our communication, learning, entertainment and socialization habits. The aim of the present research is to investigate about primary-age children's habits with these tools, as well as these children's perception of parental mediation in this area. In this study we used an ex post facto descriptive methodology by survey. A questionnaire was applied for data recollection to 422 children of private schools in Santiago de Chile aged between 9 and 12 years old. The results point to an early access to electronic devices and the transversal and homogeneous use during childhood. There is no doubt that ICTs play an active role in daily life for most of these children. No significant differences in age or sex were detected in our study, but we encountered risky behaviours in how children use ICTs and in their perception of parental mediation. The complexity becomes more evident the more time they have with electronic devices connected to the Internet without adult supervision. This finding raises the need for the application of intervention programs on parental mediation of children's use of ICTs in order to promote a safe, responsible and ethical use of these tools.
This article discusses one of the most disregarded topics in the contemporary debate about Higher Education: the ethic development of students. Surprisingly enough, from an educational perspective, this issue seems to have been ignored. So much so, that the sensation is that the relationship between university education and ethical development is considered a mere coincidence. Given the importance of this issue in the 21st Century, the aim of this article is to clarify the concept of ethical development, as well as the factors and circumstances that facilitate its growth.SOMMAIRE: Avec ce travail, nous essayons d'ouvrir de nouvelles voies de réflexion sur l'un des thèmes les moins étudiés du discours contemporain sur l'Éducation Supérieure: le développement éthique des étudiants universitaires.
Background: Critically ill children in a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) have unique nutrition needs that are challenging to achieve and thus are at high risk of malnutrition. There is increasing evidence that children who reach caloric goals early have improved outcomes. The purpose of this initiative was to implement an enteral nutrition (EN) algorithm in a tertiary care PICU utilizing clinical decision support tools (CDSTs) and a standardized order set within an electronic health record. Methods: A quality improvement initiative was undertaken to implement an EN feeding protocol using electronic CDSTs, including a new standardized order set. Results: In a historical cohort of 376 patients, only 18% met goal EN in the first 48 hours of admission. The EN protocol was implemented in 272 patients who met 88% goal feed volume within 48 hours of intensive care unit admission. Median time to start EN (1.7 vs 1.3 days, P < 0.0001) and time to goal nutrition (2.8 vs 2.2 days, P < 0.001) improved after project implementation. Length of stay in the PICU was significantly reduced following protocol implementation (202 hours pre-implementation vs 156 hours post implementation, P < 0.0001). Conclusions: We used CDSTs and standardized order sets to implement a nutrition algorithm to facilitate and likely improve the nutrition care of critically ill children.
