International audienceThe seasonal climate drivers of the carbon cycle in tropical forests remain poorly known, although these forests account for more carbon assimilation and storage than any other terrestrial ecosystem. Based on a unique combination of seasonal pan-tropical data sets from 89 experimental sites (68 include aboveground wood productivity measurements and 35 litter productivity measurements), their associated canopy photosynthetic capacity (enhanced vegetation index, EVI) and climate, we ask how carbon assimilation and aboveground allocation are related to climate seasonality in tropical forests and how they interact in the seasonal carbon cycle. We found that canopy photosynthetic capacity seasonality responds positively to precipitation when rainfall is < 2000 mm yr(-1) (water-limited forests) and to radiation otherwise (light-limited forests). On the other hand, independent of climate limitations, wood productivity and litterfall are driven by seasonal variation in precipitation and evapotranspiration, respectively. Consequently, light-limited forests present an asynchronism between canopy photosynthetic capacity and wood productivity. First-order control by precipitation likely indicates a decrease in tropical forest productivity in a drier climate in water-limited forest, and in current light-limited forest with future rainfall < 2000 mm yr(-1)

RESUMOO presente estudo teve por objetivo quantificar a massa e o estoque de nutrientes da serapilheira sobre o solo em um fragmento de Floresta Estacional Decidual no município de Itaara, RS. Para a quantificação da serapilheira, a amostragem foi realizada conforme frações estabelecidas em metodologias: uma para folhas e galhos com diâmetro menor a 1 cm (S0) e outra para material lenhoso com diâmetro de 1 cm a 3 cm (S1), 3,1 cm a 6 cm (S2) e maior que 6 cm (S3). Para a avaliação da fração S0, foram coletadas aleatoriamente cinquenta amostras com moldura metálica de 25 cm x 25 cm, já para a avaliação das frações S1, S2 e S3, foram distribuídas aleatoriamente dez parcelas de 3 m x 2 m na área de estudo. O material amostrado foi acondicionado e levado ao Laboratório de Ecologia Florestal da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria onde foram secas, pesadas, moídas e analisadas quanto aos teores de macro e micronutrientes. Cerca de 45% da serapilheira depositada sobre o solo é formada por materiais lenhosos senescentes (galhos e troncos). As frações da serapilheira diferiram significativamente (p < 0,05), quanto aos teores de nutrientes, com exceção de Mg e Cu; geralmente a fração S0 apresentou teores mais altos de nutrientes. As frações S1, S2 e S3 apresentaram um acúmulo de nutrientes variando de 53,3% para o K a 8,7% para o Fe em relação ao total da serapilheira, demonstrando a importância da quantificação desses componentes durante a avaliação do estoque de nutrientes contidos na serapilheira de ecossistema florestal. ABSTRACTThe aim of the present study was to quantity aboveground mass and nutrients in a deciduous seasonal forest fragment in the district of Itaara, RS, Brazil. For quantification and fractionation of the litter, sampling was carried out using two methodologies: the first one for leaves and branches with diameter smaller than 1 cm (S0) and the second one for woody material with diameter varying from 1 cm to 3 cm (S1), 3.1 cm to 6 cm (S2), and greater than 6 cm (S3). To evaluate the S0 fraction, 50 randomly sample were collected with a metallic frame of 25 cm x 25 cm, and for S1, S2 and S3 10 plots of 3 m x 2 m were distributed randomly in the area of study. Samples was packed and taken to the Laboratory of Forest Ecology of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, where they were dried, weighed, ground and analyzed for nutrient contents. Populations and species are disappearing due to disturbances in the environment caused by human activities. Given, the obvious risk of loss of diversity, it is increasingly necessary to take actions concerning preservation, in which safety features are necessary for measuring the variation of diversity in space and time. The aim of this study was to evaluate the structure and diversity in the arboreal component and natural regeneration in an area of Araucaria Forest in Southern Brazil. The vegetation sampling was performed by analyzing 180 subunits of 10 × 10 m, where all the arboreal individuals and natural regeneration were inventoried. Different alpha and beta indexes of diversity were calculated. The Margalef, Shannon, and the Beta indexes were underestimated, possibly influenced by the size of sample unit. Index Menhinick represented the diversity in a very real form, even in small sampling units. The indexes of Simpson and MacIntosh denote low dominance and the equity indexes showed high uniformity in species.

IVEstrutura do componente arbóreo de uma floresta estacional decidual ripária em Jaguari, RS

Objetivou-se com este trabalho a análise da diversidade florística e da distribuição espacial de espécies da regeneração natural em um fragmento de Floresta Ombrófila Mista na Floresta Nacional de São Francisco de Paula (RS), mediante a comparação de diferentes índices de diversidade e dispersão. A amostragem da vegetação foi realizada por meio de 180 subunidades de 10m x 10m, onde foram inventariados todos os indivíduos com altura superior a 1,30m e com circunferência à altura do peito (CAP) mínima de 3,0cm, até a circunferência limite de 29,9cm, considerados como regeneração natural. Foram calculados os parâmetros de frequência e densidade, os índices de dispersão de MacGuinnes, de Fracker e Brischle e de Payandeh e diferentes índices de diversidade alfa. Os índices de dispersão revelaram o mesmo comportamento para as espécies, que se mostraram agregadas ou com tendência ao agrupamento. O índice de Margalef revelou valores subestimados da diversidade, possivelmente influenciado pelo tamanho da unidade amostral. O índice de Menhinick e o índice de Shannon representaram a diversidade de forma bastante real, mesmo em unidades amostrais pequenas. Os índices de Simpson e MacIntosh denotaram baixa dominância, e os índices de equidade demonstraram alta uniformidade nas espécies.

Buscou-se avaliar o incremento diamétrico de Blepharocalyx salicifolius (Kunth) O. Berg (Myrtaceae) a partir de cintas dendrométricas fixadas em 11 indivíduos de um remanescente de Floresta Ombrófila Mista Aluvial na Região Metropolitana de Curitiba-PR. Concomitantemente às leituras de incremento, foi avaliado o comportamento fenológico desses indivíduos, durante 24 meses. O incremento diamétrico médio mensal de B. salicifolius variou de 0,36 mm a praticamente nulo nos meses mais frios (de junho a agosto) e até 1,78 mm, durante os meses mais favoráveis (de novembro a março). A taxa média de incremento anual foi de 4,52 mm. O crescimento ainda pouco expressivo nos meses de setembro e outubro pode ser justificado pelo pico de floração e frutificação. A correlação do incremento mensal intraespécie foi alta (r = 0,55), indicando boa sincronia dos dados. A correlação entre o incremento médio, as variáveis meteorológicas e as fenofases apontou que a temperatura média responde por 42% da variação do incremento médio e da frutificação.
