O ensino de Botânica, na maioria das instituições, é subvalorizado e possui teor livresco, baseado em lista de nomes a serem memorizados, que nem sempre produzem significado ou são compreendidos pelos alunos. Uma das formas de modificar a relação tanto dos alunos quanto dos docentes com o ensino de Botânica seria contextualizar o conteúdo, trazendo para a sala de aula conhecimentos e discussões que perpassem aspectos da vida comum. Dentre os conhecimentos populares que podem ser utilizados como objeto de estudo da Botânica estão as plantas medicinais. O presente estudo teve como objetivo acompanhar o desenvolvimento e a apresentação de uma pesquisa com o tema “plantas medicinais” em uma turma de 2º ano do Ensino Médio de uma escola particular na cidade de Contagem, MG, como metodologia para a introdução do conteúdo de Botânica. Foi investigado o conhecimento prévio dos alunos a respeito do tema e o conhecimento adquirido por eles após a realização do trabalho, por meio de um questionário contendo cinco perguntas dissertativas. Os questionários aplicados anteriormente e posteriormente às apresentações foram analisados, apresentando resultados relevantes em relação ao conhecimento dos alunos a respeito do tema e à confiabilidade nos princípios medicinais das plantas. Pode-se perceber que a abordagem do tema “plantas medicinais” como introdução contextualizada ao conteúdo de Botânica foi bastante efetiva, permitindo que os alunos tivessem um olhar diferenciado sobre as plantas, começassem a percebê-las cotidianamente e, com isso, dessem mais valor ao conhecimento de suas propriedades.
