This article describes the main visual characteristics used in different multimodal pieces of news related to immigrant minors in the newspaper El País, which is one of the most important newspapers in Spain. The corpus of examples consists of all the pieces of news dealing with immigrant children published from 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2011. For the framework of analysis, the study draws on visual grammar and critical discourse analysis. The study reveals that immigrant minors are represented dysphemistically in the multimodal texts analysed so that the most pejorative side of their reality is portrayed. The author thus aims to provide a visual analysis of the way in which immigrant minors are represented visually in a serious Spanish newspaper. In doing so, she aims to show visual ways of manipulation and reinforcing of stereotypes related to immigrants, in general, and immigrant minors in particular.
Teaching a foreign language like English involves teaching aspects, not only related to the target language content, but also the introduction of cultural aspects that help to learn the language embedded in a culture. This article is a contribution that shows how to include cultural aspects in the foreign language classroom in higher education. Different cooperative activities favoring the acquisition of intercultural competence were designed, and a cooperative methodology was chosen to make it easier for students to have an active role and acquire social competences. In addition, a survey was prepared to know the opinion of students on different aspects of intercultural competence. The students participating in the study were enrolled in the English Language V mandatory course, in the third year of the degree in English Studies. The results presented are significant, thanks to the importance students attach to this competence, and to how they appreciate working with it in the proposed activities. It is concluded that it is essential to introduce this competence in the twenty-first century, so that students grow as global citizens and teaching is linked to social demands.

This paper offers a multimodal analysis of the main characteristics of the compositional metafunction in the picturebook with a two-father family Me, Daddy & Dad (2017). The purpose of the analysis is to observe how textual meanings are created. The main tools of the grammar of visual design applied to picturebooks will be used for the analysis, following the model proposed by Painter et al. (2013). The main ideas of the said grammar will be illustrated with a description of images from the picturebook to deconstruct the relationship between the written text and the visual, the types of written and visual themes, the layout, the framing, and the focus. The analysis shows that both fathers take care of the child and do things at home, such as cooking. Consequently, two-father families are promoted and presented in an egalitarian way. However, the analysis shows that there are not open expressions of affection between the characters because, although the two fathers, Daddy and Dad, appear sometimes together, there is hardly any contact between them or between them and the child.
The main objective of this research is to analyse the main similarities and differences in the way the political leaders of the Irish political parties Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael are portrayed in the political posters of the general election campaigns of 2016 and 2020 in Ireland. The analysis of the posters will shed light on how the visual and linguistic characteristics contribute to the portrayal of the politicians and to the way they are empowered as leaders. Therefore, this article highlights the importance of the poster in the creation of political power. The politicians in the posters will be approached as social actors and the political poster understood as a multimodal text. Kress and van Leeuwen’s visual grammar (2021) will be used to analyse the compositional design of the poster. Moreover, van Leeuwen’s model of visual social actors (2008) will be used to analyse how social distance, social relation and social interaction contribute to establishing a relationship between the politician represented and the audience. The results of the research will show the main strategies employed in order to persuade people to vote for one party instead of another, in the sample selected.

The study reported in this paper focuses on the use of Genre Theory as an appropriate framework for English L2 writing in the subject English Language III of the degree course in English Studies. We analysed 115 recounts written by students on this course at the University of Alicante (Spain) after they had studied different text types following Genre Theory. This Theory was applied in order to increase students’ literacy skills through the study of text types and specific grammatical characteristics that appear in these texts. This study will show that using the Theory of Genre as a framework to teach academic writing helped students to improve their writing skills. The results of the texts analysed suggest that exposing students to good models of different text types, paying special attention to recounts, and asking them to write texts based on these models, improves students’ texts from the grammatical and the textual point of view.
