In this study, galvanic sludge waste (GSW) was characterized in order to identify its chemical and structural properties, allowing indicate reuse, treatment and final disposal methods, and evaluate the environmental hazards. The characterization of the galvanic sludge sample originating from a surface treatment plant from galvanic industries of semi-jewels in the Cariri region, NE of Brazil was performed. The chemical characterization of the samples by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS) and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) showed that Zn and Cu are the predominant elements. However, elements like Ni, Cd, Mn, Fe, Cr and Co are present as a minority or as trace constituents. The concentrations of residues were higher, except Ni, in the LM industry (27 g Zn.kg -1, 194 g Cu.kg -1, 8 g Fe.kg-1, 538 mg Cd.kg -1, 227 mg Ni.kg -1, 73.5 mg Cr.kg1, 14 mg Co.kg-1) in relation to LJ (11 g Zn.kg-1, 3 g Fe.kg-1, 102 g Cu.kg-1, 2 g Cd.kg-1, 141 mg Ni.kg-1, 11 mg Co.kg-1), denoting that there is no uniform standard in the treatment process of the effluent from baths for Metal deposition. According to the standard procedure (Brazilian norm NBR10004/04) the elements Cd and Cr are the main constituents responsible for the classification of the residues as hazardous. The X-ray diffractogram of the dried galvanic sludge only revealed the presence of BaSO4 and CuO as crystalline phases, a result which agrees with the results from FT-IR. The results point to an attractive way of valorizing GSW avoiding the negative impact associated with its disposal in landfills.

Recebido em 20/05/2004, aceito em 02/09/2004 RESUMO A salinidade das águas subterrâneas armazenadas nos calcários da Formação Jandaíra, que aflora na Chapada do Apodi, foi estudada através das concentrações de cloretos, sódio e potássio, da condutividade elétrica. Em adição, medidas de pH e de oxigênio-18 foram feitas. Em parte da área estudada, está implantada a Fazenda Frutacor que desenvolve plantio de bananas para exportação utilizando água subterrânea captada por poços com profundidade média de 45 m. Nesta atividade, KCl é utilizado intensivamente como fertilizante, durante todo o ano. O monitoramento durante 13 meses mostrou aumento na concentração de K + e que também, aumentaram a condutividade elétrica e a concentração de cloretos depois de ter baixado durante a época de chuvas. Medidas de oxigênio-18 indicaram processo de evaporação. A comparação da condutividade elétrica em área irrigada e em área não irrigada sugere o efeito antrópico do uso do fertilizante sobre este parâmetro. RESUMOAs águas superficiais armazenadas em três açudes e as águas subterrâneas amostradas de três cacimbas, escavadas em aluvião, localizados em área com limitada ação antrópica na Bacia da Gameleira, no semi-árido do nordestino, foram estudadas através de medidas químicas e físico-químicas para identificar a origem dos sais dissolvidos nas águas e os processos de salinização. Os resultados mostram que os sais têm origem no processo de dissolução da interação água/rocha e nas precipitações atmosféricas; o efeito do processo de evaporação como agente de enriquecimento em sais é identificado nos dois tipos de armazenamentos, principalmente nas águas superficiais. As águas eram quimicamente adequadas ao consumo humano; porém, sofrem leve efeito da ação antrópica que se reflete na concentração de nitrato.Palavras-Chave -Salinidade; aluvião; semi-árido; água subterrânea. ABSTRACTSurface waters from three dams and groundwaters from three wells dug in alluvium, located in the Gameleira watershed in an area of restricted human action in the semi-arid Northeast of Brazil, were studied through chemical and physicochemical measurements for the identication of the origin of dissolved minerals and of the processes of salination. Results show that salts result from dissolution during water/rock interaction and from atmospheric precipitation. In both types of storage, evaporation is identified as an agent of salt enrichment, principally in surface waters. Waters sampled were chemically adequate for human consumption; however,anthropic action influences nitrate concentration.

Flow modeling and hydrogeochemical inversion calculations were performed on the aquifer systems of the Crato-Juazeiro Graben in the Araripe Sedimentary Basin of the Cariri Valley, Northeast Brazil, in order to assess aquifer interconnections through an aquitard of the Araripe Plateau. Steady state hydraulic head numeric calculations with the finite difference method used Modflow software with hydrologically based boundary conditions and a piezometric surface as initial condition. Hydrogeochemical inversion with PHREEQC was performed for two water samples representing typical initial and final waters along the flow path. Flow simulation shows that approximately 20% of all recharge water from the superior aquifer system passes through the Santana aquitard reaching the middle aquifer system.
