RESUMO: Tomando como base os dados do CD-ROM Estudos da Tradução no
ABSTRACT: Based on the data gathered in Estudos da Tradução no Brasil / Translation Studies in Brazil, a CD-ROM published in 2001, this article examines theses and dissertations on translation by Brazilian researchers from the perspective of their historical and institutional location, with a view to identifying the different modes of research carried out and trends regarding the theoretical affiliation of the works. In order to characterize the academic production on translation in the Brazilian context, the map drawn from the data analysis is correlated to the map drawn by Holmes (1972;1988) for Translation Studies in Europe.
Abstract: This paper posits an affiliation of the research areas "Translation" and "Translation and Interpretation of Sign Languages" (TILS) to the disciplinary field "Translation Studies" (TS,) which, from its establishment in the early seventies, has been in constant expansion in response to the diversity of investigation of languages and cultures in contact via translation, including those between different modalities as is the case with oral and sign languages. In this context, it first maps TS in both Maria Lúcia Vasconcellos 120 international and national contexts in order to show through a review of the more recent developments in the field how research in TILS has been accepted as a specific area in TS. At graduate level, this development is clear from the number of theses and dissertations defended at various graduate programs internationally. Final considerations reaffirm the idea of affiliating TILS professionals with TS, as this affiliation -far from blurring the boundaries of professional identity specificity -can contribute to its confirmation and to the empowerment and visibility of the TILS community
This paper presents a mapping of the Systemic Functional Translation Studies (SFTS) tradition in the Brazilian environment, from its genesis up to developments in the 2000's. While studies during the earlier period are informed by the concept of "translation as (re)textualization", more recent SFTS research can be charted along the 'cline of instantiation', translations being investigated as "instantiations-in-contexts", cross-lingual functional varieties of language, or still as sources of SFL-based language description of Brazilian Portuguese. From late 90's on, computerized corpora and corpus-based methodologies have been integrated into Brazilian SFTS, for which annotation methods for the tagging of SFL categories have been developed. The paper ends with a consideration of Brazilian SFTS against the background of international SFTS as disseminated in the 2nd HCLS.
Abstract:This article looks at the phenomenon of omission of metafuncional meanings in the subtitles of the TV series Heroes drawing on the theoretical framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics, particularly regarding the metafunctional dimension and the methodological framework put forward by Kovačič (1998). On these bases, it aims to investigate the meanings translated out of the subtitles in terms of experiential, interpersonal, and textual realizations. The Linguagem, Belo Horizonte, v. 23, n.2, p. 363-388, 2015 364 analysis reveals a different representation in the Brazilian Portuguese subtitles, which end up preventing the spectator from having access to certain meanings realized in the dialogues between the characters in the series, which also impacts directly upon the representation of the flux of events of the episode under study. Keywords: subtitling; omission; systemic functional linguistics; metafuncional meanings.
