Two previously healthy, immunocompetent men had persistent Rochalimaea henselae bacteremia with clinical relapses after courses of antibiotics to which the isolates were ultimately demonstrated susceptible in vitro. Both had sustained tick bites prior to their illnesses, thus demonstrating an association not previously identified, although suspected. The first patient had relapsing fever, constitutional symptoms, and an episode of aseptic meningitis despite therapy with amoxicillin, then with doxycycline, and then with ceftriaxone. Thereafter, he spontaneously became asymptomatic during a span of 2 months of persistent bacteremia. Finally, after 2 weeks of therapy with ceftriaxone plus gentamicin, followed by 4 weeks of therapy with oral ciprofloxacin, his bacteremia was cured. The second man had relapsing fever and constitutional symptoms after courses of tetracycline, then of chloramphenicol, and then of doxycycline. He became permanently asymptomatic after serial 2-week courses of chloramphenicol and erythromycin. The greater efficacy of lysis-centrifugation blood cultures in the recovery of R. henselae was noted.
This article reports the changes to virus taxonomy approved and ratified by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) in March 2021. The entire ICTV was invited to vote on 290 taxonomic proposals approved by the ICTV Executive Committee at its meeting in October 2020, as well as on the proposed revision of the International Code of Virus Classification and Nomenclature (ICVCN). All proposals and the revision were ratified by an absolute majority of the ICTV members. Of note, ICTV mandated a uniform rule for virus species naming, which will follow the binomial 'genus-species' format with or without Latinized species epithets. The Study Groups are requested to convert all previously established species names to the new format. ICTV has also abolished the notion of a type species, i.e., a species chosen to serve as a name-bearing type of a virus genus. The remit of ICTV has been clarified through an official definition of 'virus' and several other types of mobile genetic elements. The ICVCN and ICTV Statutes have been amended to reflect these changes.
In March 2020, following the annual International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) ratification vote on newly proposed taxa, the phylum Negarnaviricota was amended and emended. At the genus rank, 20 new genera were added, two were deleted, one was moved, and three were renamed. At the species rank, 160 species were added, four were deleted, ten were moved and renamed, and 30 species were renamed. This article presents the updated taxonomy of Negarnaviricota as now accepted by the ICTV.

Psorosis, sometimes also associated with ringspot symptoms, is a widespread and damaging disease of citrus in many parts of the world including South America and the Mediterranean basin. We describe the application of RT‐PCR and DAS‐ELISA diagnostics to an isolate of citrus ringspot virus (CtRSV‐4) and other virus isolates associated with this disease. Fragments of cDNA from bottom‐component RNA of CtRSV‐4 were cloned and sequenced, and PCR primers were designed, 5′ACAATAAGCAAGACAAC upstream, and 5′CCATGTCACTTCTATTC downstream. RT‐PCR experiments using these primers allowed detection of CtRSV‐4 in infected citrus leaves down to a tissue dilution of 1/12 800 representing 2 μg of tissue, and less sensitive detection of the related citrus psorosis‐associated virus (CPsAV90‐1‐1) and four other psorosis isolates from Argentina and the USA. In addition, CtRSV‐4 particles were partially purified from local lesions in Chenopodium quinoa, and the preparations used to raise a rabbit antiserum. The antiserum was absorbed with extracts of healthy C. quinoa leaves, and a DAS‐ELISA kit was prepared and tested for detection of CtRSV‐4, CPsAV90–1‐1, and other psorosis isolates from Argentina, the USA, Italy and Spain. The ELISA detected CtRSV‐4 down to a tissue dilution of 1/1600, and most other psorosis isolates down to dilutions of 1/200–1/800. Three of a total of 20 heterologous isolates were consistently negative. Comparison of the PCR and ELISA results suggests that both methods can be used for detection of a range of psorosis isolates, but that variation of the viruses in the field might cause problems for any one diagnostic test.
Bartonella (Rochalimaea) henselae causes a variety of diseases, including bacillary angiomatosis, peliosis hepatis, lymphadenitis, aseptic meningitis with bacteremia, and cat-scratch disease (CSD). Cases of B. henselae-related disease were collected from September 1991 through November 1993. Patients with suspected CSD, unexplained fever and lymphadenitis, or suspected B. henselae infection who were seen in the Infectious Diseases Clinic at Wilford Hall Medical Center (Lackland Air Force Base, TX) underwent physical and laboratory examinations. In addition to three previously described cases, 23 patients with R. henselae-related infection were identified. The patients included 19 immunocompetent individuals presenting with lymphadenitis (11), stellate neuroretinitis (5), Parinaud's oculoglandular syndrome with retinitis (1), chronic fatigue syndrome-like disease (1), and microbiologically proven adenitis without the presence of immunofluorescent antibodies to B. henselae (1) and four patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 presenting with isolated lymphadenitis (1), diffuse upper-extremity adenitis (1), neuroretinitis (1), and aseptic meningitis (1). A couple with neuroretinitis and their pet cat, a persistently fatigued patient, and a patient with Parinaud's oculoglandular syndrome were shown to have bacteremia. Tissue cultures were positive for B. henselae in three recent cases of adenitis. Twenty-two patients were exposed to cats. This series further demonstrates the similarities between B. henselae-related diseases and CSD and identifies several new syndromes due to B. henselae.
