Objective: to assess the contributions of interactive educational technology "Caring for Dependent People" in the development of knowledge to family caregivers of dependent people in a household context and their satisfaction in its use. Method: quasi-experimental study, not randomized, of the before and after type, with a convenience sample of 65 family caregivers, from two Medicine services of a hospital in Porto, Portugal. The Control Group consisted of 33 family caregivers and the Experimental Group of 32, identified by consecutive sampling. The experimental group had access to educational technology at home. Data were collected by socio-demographic, satisfaction and evaluation of knowledge questionnaire, about how to feed by nasogastric tube, positioning and transferring the dependent person. The assessment in both groups had two moments: initial, during hospitalization and one month after discharge. Results: the experimental group had a larger increase in knowledge related to the use of the educational technology. In the control group the knowledge did not differ in the two evaluation time points. Conclusion: these results confirm the improvement of interactive educational technologies and in the training of family caregivers to care for dependents. This technology successfully met the technical quality and learning needs of caregivers, and was considered easy and stimulating.
Objective: To analyze the association between the characteristics of nurse managers and the use of information technologies in Portuguese hospitals. Method: A cross-sectional quantitative study involving 138 nurse managers. The managers answered a questionnaire about the use of key information and communication technologies in management. The findings were submitted to descriptive and analytical statistical analysis. Results: Women predominated, with more than 25 years in the profession and more than ten in management. It showed that the managers identify the utility and easiness of a singular way for each technology, the use of which is influenced by the nurses' socio-occupational characteristics, their gender, specialization (having it or not), and the time of experience in services and management being significant. Conclusion: The study contributes to explain and predict the intention to use, as well as the mastery of technologies in hospital management, providing support of choice in the management of services and need for qualification for use.
The transition of dependent people from hospital to the home is a situation that generates stress for them and for the family. This descriptive, exploratory study with a qualitative approach aims to identify the perception of nurses about the difficulties that face a family caring for a dependent person, including information needs, and with reference to applicability of use of educational technology. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 14 nurses of a hospital and two health centers in the region of Porto, Portugal. The majority of participants were men, with average age of 32.64 years, and an average of 9.86 years' experience of exercise of the profession. The nurses identified needs for information for the development of competencies in the areas of knowledge of instruments related to the self-care of moving, turning and changing place, and the utility of use of educational technology. It is concluded that mastering the areas of knowledge identified would facilitate the construction and application of educational technology for family members caring for a patient
Objectives: to acknowledge and compare the health promotion and complications' prevention practices performed by nurses working in hospital and primary health care contexts. Methods: descriptive, exploratory and crosscutting study, performed with 474 nurses selected by convenience sampling. It was used a form that encompassed two categories of descriptive statements about quality in the professional exercise of nurses. This study had ethical committee approval. Conclusion: the nurses perform health promotion and complications' prevention activities, however not in a systematic fashion and professional practices differ by context. This study is relevant as it may promote the critical consciousness of the nurses about the need of stressing quality practices.
