Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to assess the factors identified in the model of influence of family relationships in a process of succession. Design/methodology/approach – To that end, an exploratory factor analysis of a model is conducted. Such model includes four factors: family cohesion and adaptability, family commitment with the business, the relationship between the owner-manager and the successor, and the planning and training of the successor. Findings – The results confirm the relevance of the four factors used and enable the authors to identify the structure of their coefficients within each factor. Originality/value – Family involvement constitutes one of the most influential factors in the complex management of family businesses, as it can even threaten their survival. One of the most critical moments in the life of a family business is the interaction during the succession process. Therefore, the succession process continues to be a topic of growing interest to researchers in the family business literature. Given the importance of family business succession.
A la empresa donde miembros de una misma familia participan de su propiedad y gestión, y existe voluntad de continuidad, se le conoce como empresa familiar. Una de sus características distintivas es la consecución de intereses tanto económicos como no económicos; por ello, la noción de desempeño en la empresa familiar es más compleja y su estudio es aún escaso. El objetivo del trabajo fue analizar el desempeño financiero y la riqueza socioemocional en empresas mexicanas familiares y no familiares. Para lograrlo, se realizó una encuesta a una muestra de 585 empresas instaladas en los estados de Tamaulipas, Puebla y Quintana Roo (México). El cuestionario fue dirigido exclusivamente a sus gerentes y propietarios. Los datos fueron analizados por medio de técnicas estadísticas descriptivas y univariantes. Los resultados destacan diferencias significativas en el desempeño financiero y la riqueza socioemocional entre las empresas familiares y las empresas no familiares participantes.
La tecnología y la información se manifiestan como factores que permiten hacer frente o contrarrestar la competencia; sin embargo, las empresas no han sabido utilizarlas de una manera eficiente. Esta investigación analiza el grado de influencia que tiene el uso de la tecnología y la administración de la información en las pequeñas y medianas empresas a la hora de enfrentar a sus competidores en el mercado en el cual se encuentran. Este análisis se plantea de forma que proporcione una guía de acción para la mejor utilización de los datos e información generados en este tipo de instituciones. El estudio empírico se lleva a cabo en la región centro del estado de Tamaulipas (México) por medio de un cuestionario y del análisis multivariante con el software PLS. Los resultados muestran el impacto positivo que tiene la tecnología de información en la empresa para contrarrestar la competencia y en especial en la administración de la información.
The research of the role of women within organizations, studied since different disciplines, has been increasing to try to find out the causes of the lag in their participation; this concern increases when she is a member of a family-owned business. The relevance of the family business in the economy of a country, have increased the interest in knowing it in the last 40 years. Given the prevailing difference regarding access and development within the family business, the question arises about the expectations of women in the succession process. The aim of this research is to identify the factors that influence the decision of the selection of a woman to succeed in the direction of the family business in the next generation. To achieve this, 652 owners of family businesses in four states of the Mexican Republic were surveyed, using a Logit model for their analysis. The results show an important gender influence, since the presence of a female family member in the property and the management will positively influence the selection of another woman. Likewise, the age of the company, its size, and the sector in which it operates are influencing factors.
La sucesión en la empresa familiar es considerada como una etapa decisiva para su continuidad. Aunque es uno de los tópicos más estudiados, solo una pequeña proporción de ellas sobrevive a cada transferencia generacional. En las economías en desarrollo como las latinoamericanas, la generación de conocimiento sobre el tema es significativa dada la importante proporción de empresas familiares en cada país, y en consecuencia su contribución económica y social. El presente trabajo es una revisión bibliográfica sobre el proceso de sucesión de la empresa familiar. Tiene por objetivo la reconstrucción de su campo de estudio para propiciar el desarrollo de nuevos trabajos. Entre los principales resultados destaca la relación entre la sucesión y la planeación estratégica, la influencia familiar y la gestión integral.
