The phytogeographical region known as the Caldenal comprises an area of approximately 10 million ha in the central temperate part of Argentina (35-408 S, 62-668 W). The original physiognomy of the vegetation consisted of a gramineous steppe with isolated shrubs and trees. Rangeland deterioration was initiated in the early-1900s with the introduction of livestock by the colonizing European ranchers. After a few decades of inappropriate use, the Caldenal proved to be a fragile environment. Major environmental impacts were: (a) The replacement of the most abundant palatable grasses Poa ligularis, Stipa clarazii, S. tenuis, Piptochaetium napostaense and Digitaria californica by low nutritive unpalatable grasses such as Stipa gynerioides, S. tenuissima, S. ambigua, S. bracychaeta and Elyonurus muticus; (b) The conversion of extensive areas dominated by grasses to a scrubland. There, frequent species are: Condalia microphylla, Lycium chilense, Prosopis alpataco, Larrea divaricata and Chuquiraga erinacea; (c) Depletion of plant cover resulting in incipient but increasing soil erosion in extensive areas. With the purpose of reversing this situation, the remit initiated 25 years ago was to develop management guidelines conducive to sustainable productivity while preserving the natural resources of the region. This work provides a comprehensive assessment of the impact of major stresses (drought, herbivory, fire) on grass and shrub responses, as well as more basic studies on the ecophysiology of these species. We have gained knowledge which is extremely useful to initiate rangeland utilization based on scientific information, facilitating increased sustainable rangeland productivity while preserving the natural resources.
Chest trauma is a frequent problem arising from lesions caused by domestic and occupational activities and especially road traffic accidents. These injuries can be analyzed from distinct points of view, ranging from consideration of the most severe injuries, especially in the context of multiple trauma, to the specific characteristics of blunt and open trauma. In the present article, these injuries are discussed according to the involvement of the various thoracic structures. Rib fractures are the most frequent chest injuries and their diagnosis and treatment is straightforward, although these injuries can be severe if more than three ribs are affected and when there is major associated morbidity. Lung contusion is the most common visceral lesion. These injuries are usually found in severe chest trauma and are often associated with other thoracic and intrathoracic lesions. Treatment is based on general support measures. Pleural complications, such as hemothorax and pneumothorax, are also frequent. Their diagnosis is also straightforward and treatment is based on pleural drainage. This article also analyzes other complex situations, notably airway trauma, which is usually very severe in blunt chest trauma and less severe and even suitable for conservative treatment in iatrogenic injury due to tracheal intubation. Rupture of the diaphragm usually causes a diaphragmatic hernia. Treatment is always surgical. Myocardial contusions should be suspected in anterior chest trauma and in sternal fractures. Treatment is conservative. Other chest injuries, such as those of the great thoracic and esophageal vessels, are less frequent but are especially severe.
Pollen analyses were carried out on 33 honey samples from Espinal, Monte de Llanuras y Mesetas and Pampeana phytogeographical Provinces, collected during the 2000-2001 period. Sample processing as well as qualitative and quantitative analyses were performed according to standard techniques. Sixty-seven morphological pollen types were identified. The association of Eucalyptus sp. (E. camaldulensis Dehnh., E. viminalis Labill.), Centaurea sp. (C. solstitialis L., C. calcitrapa L.) and Diplotaxis tenuifolia DC. characterized these honeys. Twelve samples were unifloral: six from Eucalyptus sp., five from Helianthus annuus L., and one from Brassicaceae. Asteraceae and Fabaceae were the most representative botanical families.
The aim of this work was to produce a melissopalynological map of the south and southwest of the Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, using pollen analysis data pertaining to 127 honey samples from the Pampa, Espinal (the Calden District), and Monte de Llanuras y Mesetas ecoregions, collected over the period [1992][1993][1994][1995][1996][1997][1998][1999][2000][2001][2002]. Using principal components and hierarchical cluster analysis, the different districts were grouped into five regions: I (Tres Arroyos, San Cayetano, Coronel Pringles and Coronel Dorrego), II (Guaminí, Saavedra, Coronel Suárez and Adolfo Alsina), III (Coronel Rosales, Monte Hermoso, Bahía Blanca and Villarino), IV (Patagones and Tornquist), and V (Puán). In Regions I, III and IV, 80% of honey samples were monofloral: Region I was characterized by the presence of 50% Helianthus annuus honeys and 10% clover honeys, Region III by 65% Eucalyptus sp. honeys, and Region IV by 30% Diplotaxis tenuifolia honeys. In Regions II and V, 50% of honeys were monofloral. Region II was distinguished by the presence of 50% H. annuus honeys, and Region V by 15% Larrea divaricata and 15% Vicia sp. honeys. The multifloral honeys of Region V included samples containing Condalia microphylla pollen. The families Fabaceae and Asteraceae provided the greatest diversity of pollen types. The association of Eucalyptus sp., Centaurea sp., and Diplotaxis tenuifolia characterised the honeys from all five regions. The natural variability of honey samples renders it very difficult to define the boundaries between the different regions.Additional key words: botanical origin, geographical origin, honey, melissopalynological, pollen analysis.
