Objective: To identify the repercussions of type 1 diabetes mellitus in childhood and adolescence. Methodology: This is an integrative review study, conducted with methodological rigor, able to provide a comprehensive view of the state of the art on a topic. In view of this, the guiding question of this study outlined on the acronym PICO is: “What are the repercussions that Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus causes in childhood and adolescence?”. To search for scientific studies on the topic addressed, the following databases were used: BDENF and LILACS. Results and Discussion: Isolation attitudes are common in children with DM1, which can lead to the development of low self-esteem, compromising their development, due to the importance of socialization in all stages of childhood, as a stimulus to psychological and physical maturation. It is necessary that the family, faced with the diagnosis of DM in childhood, seeks to practice adapting to provide healthy habits and improve the quality of life of children and adolescents. Final Considerations: Thus, the process of coping with the disease varies according to each child. However, feelings of resentment, denial, frustration, insecurity and anxiety are common when receiving the diagnosis and living with DM1. These feelings must be recognized and valued by the health team.
