ABSTRACTThis paper discusses the paleoenvironmental value of the Family Anemiaceae from analyses of Cretaceous palynological assemblages containing spores belonging to the genus Cicatricosisporites. The analyzed samples are from Cretaceous units of several Brazilian sedimentary basins -Sanfranciscan Basin, Parnaíba Basin, Paraná Basin, Almada Basin and Pernambuco-Paraíba Basin. In the Areado and Codó formations, respectively from the Sanfranciscan and Parnaiba basins, the occurrence of terrestrial palynomorphs and abundant Classopollis pollen grains -isolated and in tetrads -indicates continental deposition close to the source area in a dry, hot climate. Cicatricosisporites, when not highly represented statistically in these formations, could suggest incompatibility with dry and hot conditions. However, some samples of the Codó Formation are characterized by the absence of Classopollis and the abundance of psilate and ornamented trilete spores -including Cicatricosisporites and Perotriletes. The latter suggests the existence of relatively humid periods with locally higher water availability. In the sample from the Bauru G...
Microbial mats are organo-sedimentary ecosystems formed by autotrophic and heterotrophic bacterias. Cyanobacteria contribute to the formation of these structures from the entrapment and engulfment of sediments contributing to the formation of carbonate rocks found in the geological record from the Precambrian to the Recent. In this research we identified the living cyanobacteria mats type 1 (gelatinous) and type 2 (cohesives) present in Brejo do Espinho and Araruama saline, east Fluminense, Rio de Janeiro state. The microbial mats type 1, were found in compartiment A and B of Brejo do Espinho and the Araruama saline in the tank with a depth of 10 cm. The mats type 2 were only found in compartiment A and in tank with 15 cm depth. In the microbial mats of compartiments A and B predominated the spherical forms of genres Chroococcus Nägeli 1948 and Aphanothece Nägeli 1948. In the tanks predominated filamentous forms of the Leptolyngbya Anagnostidis and Komárek 1988 genre. In mats type 1, the diversity indices (H') were 1.95 and 2.24 and in type 2 of 2.16 and 2.14 for the Brejo do Espinho and Araruama saline, respectively. The highest values of diversity indices found in saline tanks occurred by stable salinity conditions.
Palavras-chave: Paleontologia; escola; educação Abstract A problem exists in the teaching of basic concepts about Paleontology to students of the elementary schools in the Rio de Janeiro state network, because National Curricular Parameters (PCN) do not emphasize or value the role of Paleontology within the Natural Sciences. The purpose of the present work is to investigate the basic paleontological knowledge of these students by distributing a questionnaire comprising the following six questions: (1) Do you understand the meaning of the term Paleontology?; (2) Have you ever seen a fossil and, if so, where (magazine, movie, museum, other)?; (3) What is a fossil and are there any fossils in Brazil?; (4) What is a geologist?; (5) What is a dinosaur? (6) Have humans ever lived with dinosaurs? At present, five schools have been analyzed and 399 students tested. 16.6% answered that they understood what Paleontology is, but between them, 77.2% had only a superficial idea, 22.8% wrong ideas, and 83.4% had no idea whatsoever. 81.4% had already seen and understood what a fossil is, but 116 between them defined it incorrectly, 45.7...
This study is based on the morphometry of 112 morphospecies of fossil spores of the Family Anemiaceae (Class Polypodiopsida, Order Schizaeales), collected from several strata of Brazilian basins, ranging from the Lower Cretaceous up to the Quaternary, as well as on the morphometry of spores of 129 living species of this family around the world. The objective of the study is to analyze the relationship among their morphometric characters, chronostratigraphy and climate/paleoclimate. The following parameters were established: D1 (larger diameter), D2 (smaller diameter), EM (width of the muri) and DM (distance between the muri). Measurements in micrometers were saved in an Excel spreadsheet in order to make regression analysis charts, which showed the following results: (1) perfect linear correlation between D1 and D2, regardless of geological age and climate, which was expected, as spores of Anemiaceae are equidimensional; (2) no perfect linear correlation between D1 and EM, and an increase in D1, caused by an increase in the denseness of their muri. The lack of linearity is noticeable in Lower Cretaceous species, in which thin muri predominate. In the Lower Cretaceous, the densest murus is no thicker than 4 µm, whereas, in the Upper Cretaceous, muri of up to 8 µm were observed. Regardless of the kind of climate, reasonable linearity was observed among extant species, which are devoid of very thin muri; (3) there is no correlation between EM and DM in species from the Cretaceous to the Tertiary, showing a wide range of DM values for each EM value. This result was expected, as the muri denseness and the distance between the muri are, a priori, independent parameters. In the Cretaceous, DM values are generally low, and values lower than 2 µm predominate. In the Tertiary, DM values vary from 0.5 µm to 6 µm. An inverse relationship between EM and DM is shown for living species, especially species of the semi-arid to semi-humid regions. Fossil species did not show this relationship due to the existence of species with thin and dense muri (e.g., Cicatricosisporites microstriatus, C. minutaestriatus and C. avnimelechi) and species with walls of median thickness and great distance between them (e.g., Cicatricosisporites hughesii and C. purbeckensis).
