AbstractA pollen and spore based biostratigraphy of the Alagoas Stage (Lower Cretaceous) in the Araripe Basin, Northeastern Brazil. Any knowledge achieved about the geological history of the Araripe Basin contributes effectively for understanding the geology of the entire Northeastern Brazil. Besides the several researches concerning the rich fossiliferous content of that basin, specially of the Alagoas Stage, there are few studies focused on biostratigraphical aspects, which are especially important for understanding the geological evolution of a basin. Aiming at achieving a biostratigraphical framework to the Alagoas Stage in the Araripe Basin, palynological analyses were proceeded on 167 samples from 14 wells drilled at the Eastern portion of the Araripe Basin. The interval, composed of sandstones, microclastic sediments, limestones, and evaporites, was assigned to the Rio da Batateira and Santana Formations. The biostratigraphical analyses showed that only P-270.2 and P-280.1 subzones, from Regali & Santos (1999), are present in the studied area. Comparison of these results with data from other authors allowed to recognize correlated intervals in the Parnaíba, Grajaú, Potiguar, and Sergipe basins.

A detailed palynological analysis was conducted on 29 samples obtained from the Cretaceous interval of the well Campos-01, drilled in the Northern portion of the offshore Campos Basin. The main objectives of this study were to precise the age the rocks and to perform an analysis and interpretation of the depositional environment of the interval. The material consists of mainly shales, marls, calcareous mudstones and sandstones deposited in a deep marine environment. The palynological analysis consisted on identification and counting of all palynomorphs. The paleoenvironmental and paleoecological investigations were supported by cluster analysis, ecological indices (e.g. diversity, dominance) and ratios (e.g. continental:marine) were used. A total of 97 taxa was identified, which included 46 genera of dinoflagellates cysts, 25 genera of spores, 21 genera of pollen grains, 2 genera of freshwater algae and microforaminiferal linings. The recorded assemblage (e.g. Trichodinium castanea, Dinogymnium acuminatum, Zlivisporis blanensis) was assigned to a late Campanian-late Maastrichtian age for the studied section. The interval is clearly dominated by the dinoflagellate cysts that reach 90.7% of total of palynomorphs. On the basis of cluster analysis (r-mode) three dinoflagellate associations were recognized: Systematophora, Areoligera and Spiniferites. The stratigraphic distribution of dinoflagellates associations indicates three intervals (I1-I3). The intervals I1 and I2, dominated by Systematophora and Spiniferites respectively, are interpreted as open marine environment. In the interval I3, the dominance of Areoligera Association indicates a nearshore environment, also supported by the large amount of continental elements, including the genus Callialasporites, which is attributed to high altitude flora, suggesting the presence of highland feeding areas.
-PLANKTONIC FORAMINIFERA BIOSTRATIGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF FOUR CORES FROM THE ALMIRANTE CÂMARA LOBE COMPLEX, CAMPOS BASIN. The Almirante Câmara lobe complex is located in the northeastern Campos Basin, at the southeastern Brazilian continental margin. This complex is an excellent analogue to the Carapebus Formation, where are the major hydrocarbon reserves from the post-salt interval of this basin. The objective of this work is to contribute to the existing knowledge of this lobe complex through micropaleontological analysis based on planktonic foraminifers from four piston cores, aiming to estimate the age of the sand beds deposition and to propose a hypothesis for the difference among the biozones present in each core and their expected thickness. A total of 39 samples were collected from the piston cores, prepared according to the standard methodology for Quaternary calcareous microfossils, and about 300 tests of planktonic foraminifers were taxonomically identified per sample. In the piston cores LAC 18, LAC 22 and LAC 23 were recognized the Biozone Z and the subzones Y1A and Y1B. In the piston core LAC 19 were identified the Biozone Z, the Subzone Y1 and an indication of the presence of the Biozone X at the base of the piston core. The presence of the Biozone X was not expected in the piston core LAC 19, since it is only 1.23 m long and seismic analysis done by previous works indicated that, at the site where it was collected, the thickness of the Biozone Y should be between 10 m and 20 m. Two hypothesis are considered for this difference. The first is erosion caused by the proximity of this piston core with one of the main deposition channels of the lobes. Other possibility is that of erosion caused by high-energy deep water currents, especially during the Last Glacial Maximum.
