The social and economic changes which happened in the last decades in our country, the ageing of the population and the increase of the life expectancy, have led to redefine the roles that grandfathers and grandmothers play in the family, assuming, in some cases, the functions of education and care of grandsons and granddaughters, when fathers and mothers can´t. The objective of this work is to know the implication of grandfathers and grandmothers in the care and education of their grandsons and granddaughters and the effects in themselves as well as in their sons and daughters. A descriptive exploratory study applied to a sample of 30 grandfathers and grandmothers of the Principality of Asturias has been carried out, an adaptation of the Questionnaire on Parental Competences (Martínez González, 2009). The results show the importance of deepening in the needs of support and training of grandfathers and grandmothers to play the new role.KEY WORDS: grandfathers, grandmothers; grandsons, granddaughters; educational responsibility of grandfathers and grandmothers; family conciliation.
This paper presents the main findings of the assessment process made over the last six academic years on different topics of the fifth grade practicum, Practicum II of the Bachelor of Education at the University of Oviedo. Data gathered from the information obtained from a sample of 207 students of Pedagogy Practicum II. The purpose of the study is to have valid and reliable evidence on the Practicum experience in the degree and to take that experience to plan the new Practicum or Practicum matters relating to the Degree of Education. Thus, we have set the following objectives: 1) Know the general assessment of the Practicum students in the 5th grade, a practicum intervention. 2) Get information from students on various aspects of the Practicum: organization, support from tutors, workshops usefulness of reflection, and coordination centers-Faculty. Students have responded to a questionnaire of eight open-ended questions and an item on a rating scale about their experience in the Practicum. The questionnaire has asked students to rate the organizational, management and coordination, the level attained in the expected competencies, and make proposals for improvement. In general, the overall results of student ratings can be considered very satisfactory. Most students value the Practicum 68.59% with a score high or very high, at 20.77% gives an average rating and only 3.86% with a score value it low and very low.
In the so called Information and Knowledge Society, social and cultural capital are expected values. Despite the technological and scientific progres and the unstoppable development of Information and Communication Technologies, the doubts families feel about how to performe their parental role increases. Although the range of resources parents and children have at their disposal to get information to resolve those doubts is very wide (printed material, telephone, chats, social networks…), it seems that there is still lack of communication among the family members, which bring about conflicts which are not always solved in a constructive way. So, it is relevant to build nets which may support the educational and socialization role of the family. This paper analizes how 689 fathers and mothers perceive themselves regading communication strategies with their children. Variables related to communication styles with children, parental skills of emotional self-regulation, and strategies to solve conflicts have been analyzed. In order to collect qualitative and quantitative data, surveys, self-information, participative observation and focus groups techniques were used. The quantitative data was processed with descriptive and variables association statistics. The final conclusions indicate that parents demand information to better cope with their parental role, thus, parenting programms should be developed on a community base. Also, taking advantage of the wide scope the Net provides us, parents´ participation in Blogs and Virtual Learning Communities should be promoted. These resources may be understood as networks for social support, and ideal meeting places for exchanging concerns, experiences and worries. All in all, will promote the development of "Positive Parenting" as expected by the European Council.
Career Development (CDG) is an essential intervention area in guidance because it provides people, particularly adolescents, with relevant strategies for decision-making based on self-knowledge of their own competencies and knowledge of the academic and labor world. In the current situation of change and transition towards uncertain and changing work models, with an increasing predominance of technologies, it is necessary to guide future generations by taking as a starting point their real needs in the present. Therefore, it is required to have information collection instruments that include the relevant variables. Thus, in this paper a systematic review in specific databases of education and psychology has been carried out, in order to identify significant research on CDG in adolescents from secondary education, high school and vocational training. The searching procedure has provided 38 documents that are thoroughly analyzed. The results show the diversity of approaches, instruments, and dimensions of analysis. We conclude by highlighting the need to design instruments that collect quantitative and qualitative data and that consider not only context variables but also variables related to self-knowledge, labor market knowledge, skills for decision-making, gender, equity and the inclusion of different groups, especially vulnerable people.
