A expansão do Ensino Superior no Brasil tem ocorrido de forma bastante expressiva por meio da modalidade Educação a Distância (EaD), sobretudo, a partir do início do século XXI, com o avanço das Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TDIC) e o processo de globalização, influenciando sobremaneira, o cenário educacional. Nesse contexto, novas propostas metodológicas têm dado o tom e o ritmo das mudanças políticas e pedagógicas nessa modalidade de ensino. Nesse percurso, vários estudiosos têm trabalhado na conceituação dessa modalidade de ensino, contribuindo para que ela ganhe visibilidade nos instrumentos legais. Baseando-se nessas orientações, as Instituições de Ensino Superior (IES) têm ofertado cursos por meio do ensino na EaD. A Universidade Federal do Piauí (UFPI), por exemplo, implementou essa modalidade de ensino a partir do início do século XXI. Desse modo, neste estudo, fez-se uma análise geográfica espacial, quanto ao avanço dos polos e da oferta de cursos promovidos pelo Centro de Educação Aberta e a Distância (CEAD/UFPI), nos estados do Piauí e da Bahia. O estudo assume uma abordagem qualitativa e exploratória, realizado por meio de pesquisa bibliográfica, a partir de autores mais clássicos, do final do século XX; e autores mais contemporâneos, dessas duas primeiras décadas do século XXI; bem como, pesquisa documental, por meio da análise de dados institucionais do CEAD/UFPI, regidos pelo conceito de EaD na legislação brasileira. A análise focou na expansão dos polos de ofertas dos cursos de graduação. Os resultados revelam que aumentou 256% o número de polos semipresenciais, de 2012 a 2016. Do mesmo modo, houve aumento significativo na diversidade de cursos ofertados, passando de 11 (onze) opções em 2012 para 14 (quatorze) opções em 2016. O mesmo é constatado quanto a oferta do número de vagas de 3.125 (três mil, cento e vinte e cinco) em 2012 para 9.310 (nove mil, trezentas e dez) em 2016.
