Dentre as principais doenças que causam deficiência, a depressão ocupa o quarto lugar. É uma doença multifatorial, causada por alterações psicológicas que podem causar mortalidade. Como tratamento, é indicado o uso de antidepressivo. Porém, devido ao alto custo e o tratamento duradouro, o exercício físico vem sendo indicado como uma terapia alternativa e eficaz no tratamento da mesma. Objetivo: Revisar na literatura o impacto do exercício físico como auxílio no tratamento da depressão. Métodos: Foi realizada uma revisão da literatura dos últimos 10 anos, utilizando os termos depression, serotonin, exercise, physical activity e strenght training, nas bases de dados Pubmed, Scielo e Lilacs. Após aplicação dos critérios de inclusão e exclusão foram selecionados 15 estudos, que foram os analisados. Resultados: Dentre os estudos avaliados, foi identificado que o exercício físico aeróbico de intensidade média é o mais indicado para pacientes com depressão. Conclusão: Estes achados apontam que o exercício físico é uma alternativa eficaz no tratamento de pacientes com depressão.Palavras-chave: depressão, serotonina, exercício físico.
