El Yaque Norte es uno de los ríos más importantes de República Dominicana, es utilizado para fines de consumo, presas de reserva, hidroeléctricas, regadíos y otros; sin embargo, las evidencias muestran que muchos de los afluentes domésticos e industriales son descargados directamente a sus aguas, sin previo tratamiento. En el presente trabajo se realiza una evaluación fisicoquímica y microbiológica de las aguas superficiales en la cuenca alta, media y baja del río Yaque del Norte, utilizando el Standart Methods para análisis de agua. Los resultados demuestran, que no existen diferencias significativas de los parámetros fisicoquímicos: pH, salinidad, conductividad turbidez, sólidos totales y dureza; sin embargo, estos parámetros muestran alteraciones a lo largo del río. Los niveles de coliformes totales, coliformes fecales o termotolerantes y Escherichia coli exceden los límites establecidos en la regulación dominicana. El agua no cumple con estándares para su consumo y esto representa un gran problema ambiental y de salud para las comunidades aledañas al río que hace uso de ella.
