The Peer Group as a Context of MaladjustmentAbstract: In this paper, the peer group is analysed as the context in which maladjustment processes develop. Contrary to popular belief, these groups do not correspond to indexes of underdevelopment, neither are they typical of any particular racial group, a given social condition, or a cultural or intellectual level. These groups represent a universal phenomenon of voluntary adhesion, whose members interact regularly developing affective bonds, have a common frame of reference, and are behaviourally interdependent. This type of peer group is characterised by the creation of a socially deviant identity, by their hostility towards formal authority and their desire to rebel against it. The aim of this paper is to establish a theoretical systemisation of some research undertaken from the standpoint of group dynamics. This analysis of the deviant peer group is therefore centred on its typical composition, creation, development and structure.
