ABSTRACT An introduction to Single-Subject Experimental DesignsSingle-subject designs are the experimental designs of choice for many behavior researchers. The purpose of the present article is to present the basic features of single-subject designs. In order to do so, the related concepts of experimentation, independent, dependent, and extraneous variables and the stages that comprise an experiment are introduced. A definition of experimental design is presented and the two most common research strategies are described: group (or between-subjects) designs and single-subject designs. The basic differences between the two strategies are presented. The main characteristics of single-subject designs and the most common single-subject designs are presented with emphasis on the strategy of steady states. Reverse designs, multiple baseline designs, changing criterion designs, and probe designs are described, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. Finally, the possibility of mixed experimental designs is also discussed.
Palavras-chave: comportamento social; produção agregada; prática cultural; Análise do Comportamento.Social Behavior, Aggregated Production, and Cultural Practice:A Behavioral Analysis of Social Phenomena ABSTRACT -Behavior Analysis ought to deal with and has effectively dealt with social phenomena: facts or events involving actions of more than one person. Based on the published literature, this paper seeks to distinguish three events labeled as social phenomena: social behavior -three-term contingencies whose consequences are mediated by the operant behavior of another organism(s); aggregated production -sets of behaviors of more than one individual that result in an aggregated product; and cultural practice -similar learned behaviors propagated by successive individuals. Characteristics and complexities of these three phenomena are discussed. Dialogue possibilities with Social Sciences are highlighted. Keywords: social behavior; aggregated production; cultural practice; Behavior Analysis. (Andery, 1990;Skinner, 1953).
Interaction between Behavior Therapists and their Clients Diagnosed with Obsessive-Compulsive DisorderABSTRACT -This study aimed at characterizing the work of two behavior analysts in a therapeutic setting, with clients with a diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Four to fi ve therapeutic sessions of each pair (therapist -client) were recorded. The therapist and clients' verbalizations were classifi ed in relation to their relation to the client's complaints, and were categorized as: questions, descriptions, explanations, advices, feedback, inferences or other verbalization. Results indicated differences between the two therapists: the verbalization of therapists A suggested that he applied differential reinforcement to certain classes of client's verbalizations, with a small occurrence of counseling, while the verbalization of therapist B was classifi ed as giving advice and explaining. For both therapists, the majority of their explanations about the clients' behavior were classifi ed as emphasizing the response-consequence relationship, whichy be suggestive of coherence with the behavior analytical approach.
