This author extracts the environmental theory from Florence Nightingale's writings and recorded experiences. As Nightingale's experiences broadened to other cultures and circumstances, she generated an ever-widening commitment to redress unjust social policies imperiling human health. She mobilized collaborators, shaped public awareness, and championed the cause of those suffering as a result of unjust policies. Nightingale challenged nurses to create environments where population health is a realistic expectation.
Baccalaureate students enrolled in 6 accelerated programs reported their stress level, sources of stress, and coping strategies. They differentiated helpful from unhelpful coping strategies. Findings indicate that accelerated nursing students experienced high stress levels over prolonged periods that exceeded stress levels in prior life events. Implications for nurse educators in accelerated nursing programs are explored.
Findings of a qualitative retrospective study of coping strategies of newly widowed elderly are presented. The focus is on effects of anticipatory grieving on the caregiver before the spouse's death as reported by the widowed partner following the death. Most frequent and troubling problems were reported as loneliness, social isolation, disruption in eating and sleeping patterns and independent decision making. Changes in health status following the death were not as detrimental as expected. Caregivers' health actually improved when those responsibilities were over. Recommendations for hospice care for the caregiver are suggested.
