The literacy in Earth Sciences of a citizen who completes basic education is now considered as an essential objective in order to formulate value judgments and make decisions about the problems that arise daily in the society in which he lives. Based on the key ideas of a Spanish Commission, created to identify the basic knowledge items in Earth Sciences, a synopsis is made with the curricular goals for Portuguese basic education related to Earth Sciences contents. The analysis shows that Portugal has set learning objectives for basic education that places it at the forefront of the proposals within the key ideas established by the aforementioned Commission.
Aim: The aim of the research is to discuss if the lean thinking methodology may contribute to enhance interdisciplinarity and collaboration in higher education engineering courses, namely when applied to engineering students at a Portuguese Higher Education Technology School. Methods. Lean thinking is an organisational methodology that uses innovation to organise and optimise human activities with the aim of eliminating waste. This methodology can be applied to a wide range of activities envisaging to mainly perform tasks that effectively add value to the related processes. When used in an educational context, this approach may also contribute to identifying which activities successfully contribute to add value to the students’ learning process, as opposed to being ineffective for that aim. Results. Current study focuses on interdisciplinarity through a set of collaborative Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) tasks that were planned, tested and assessed in an engineering Higher Education context. Conclusion. One of the main aspects envisaged through the developed CLIL tasks was to contribute to the enhancement of peer-to-peer collaborative learning in an interdisciplinary context, another was to reflect on reciprocal cooperation methodologies that enhance interdisciplinarity in Higher Education.
This paper describes a didactic experience aimed at developing one the most requested competences in work environments, namely intercultural communicative competence (ICC) in Business Spanish Foreign Language (BSFL), which was developed through student collaboration (telecollaboration) in two European Higher Education Area (EHEA) institutions. In the framework of the Erasmus + project ICCAGE: Intercultural Communicative Competences: An Advantage for Global Employability (http://iccageproject.wixsite.com/presentation), a didactic unit called "European commercial tandem" was created, piloted and implemented in parallel at the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco (Portugal) and at the Budapest Business School (Hungary) during the academic year 2016-2017. The aim of this unit was to have students create, through cooperative ICT-assisted tasks, a webpage in Spanish for an international company.
Lean and Green manufacturing processes aim at achieving lower material and labour costs, while reducing impacts on the environment, and promoting sustainability as a whole. This paper reports on a pilot experiment with higher education and engineering students, exploring the full potential of a collaborative approach on courses integrating the Portuguese Polytechnic of Castelo Branco engineering studies curricula, while simultaneously improving their proficiency in English. Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) has become a key area of curricular innovation since it is known for improving both language and content teacher and student motivation. In this context, instructional design for CLIL entailed tandem work of content (engineering) and language (English) teacher to design learning sequences and strategies. This allowed students to improve not only their language skills in English but also their knowledge in the specific engineering domain content on green and lean manufacturing processes.
