Using the reduction of MnO4- to Mn2+ in aqueous solution to demonstrate the four factors that control reaction rates in solution: the natures of the reactants, concentrations of the reactants, temperature, and the presence of a catalyst.
This demonstration illustrates that acid-base indicators may come in many forms, and further exhibits the reversible effects that acids and bases may have on the colors of such indicators. It is described here in the form in which it was presented during Michigan State University's Chemusical Extravaganza at the ChemEd '93 Conference at Butler University, Indiana. Several variations that are employed by the MSU Science Theatre demonstration group are also discussed. The demonstration involves the dyeing of an object in an indicator, which causes the object to turn dark blue at pH less than 3.0 to 5.0.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
