The members of the Tingidae family are commonly known as "lace bugs" because of the lacelike appearance of their pronotum and hemelytra. The family is distributed worldwide and is constituted by three subfamilies, Tinginae, Cantacaderinae, and Vianaidinae; all of them represented in the Neotropical Region being the last one endemic of this region. There are around 300 genera and 2,500 species in this family, but for the Neotropical Region, there are known approximately 70 genera and 600 species; most of them belong to the subfamily Tinginae. All lace bugs are phytophagous and host specifi c, with a few exceptions. Among them, there are some that have economic importance as crop pests and others that are useful for controlling harmful weeds in fi eld crops. Herein we characterize and diagnose the family, we mention some of the most relevant aspects of their biology and ecology, and we provide a summary of its taxonomy with some comments about its phylogeny. The economically most relevant species of the Neotropical Region are listed; for all of them, we provide information about their host plants, distributions, and related literature. We also developed a key to the most economically important Neotropical genera.

Connecting basic data about bats and other potential hosts of SARS-CoV-2 with their ecological context is crucial to the understanding of the emergence and spread of the virus. However, when lockdowns in many countries started in March, 2020, the world's bat experts were locked out of their research laboratories, which in turn impeded access to large volumes of offline ecological and taxonomic data. Pandemic lockdowns have brought to attention the long-standing problem of so-called biological dark data: data that are published, but disconnected from digital knowledge resources and thus unavailable for high-throughput analysis. Knowledge of host-to-virus ecological interactions will be biased until this challenge is addressed. In this Viewpoint, we outline two viable solutions: first, in the short term, to interconnect published data about host organisms, viruses, and other pathogens; and second, to shift the publishing framework beyond unstructured text (the so-called PDF prison) to labelled networks of digital knowledge. As the indexing system for biodiversity data, biological taxonomy is foundational to both solutions. Building digitally connected knowledge graphs of host–pathogen interactions will establish the agility needed to quickly identify reservoir hosts of novel zoonoses, allow for more robust predictions of emergence, and thereby strengthen human and planetary health systems.

ABSTRACT. Nymphs and adults of Tingis americana Drake, 1922 were found feeding on leaves of Handroanthus heptaphyllus (Vell.) Mattos and Handroanthus chrysotrichus (Mart. ex A. DC.) Mattos in the Botanic Garden, Porto Alegre, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. This is the first record of T. americana on these host plants and in the southern Brazil. We aimed to compare the nymphal development on both hosts and to analyze the reproductive parameters on H. heptaphyllus (25 ± 1°C; 60 ± 10% RH; 16 h photophase). The mean nymphal period (days) was shorter in individuals reared on H. heptaphyllus (12.69 ± 0.076) than on H. chrysotrichus (19.11 ± 0.208) (P < 0.0001), however, nymph viability was similar. On H. heptaphyllus, the mean embryonic period lasted 12.32 ± 0.274 days and the egg viability was 92%. The mean total and daily fecundity were 310.0 ± 19.40 eggs/female and 7.46 ± 0.302 eggs/female/day, respectively. Paired males and females showed similar longevity (P = 0.0691), while unpaired females lived longer than unpaired males (P = 0.0460). Individuals of two genera, Baeotingis Drake & Poor, 1939, and Coleopterodes Philippi, 1814, were collected from natural grassland areas in Eldorado do Sul and Lavras do Sul municipalities, in Rio Grande do Sul state. This constitutes the first records of these taxa for Brazil. The distribution of these genera including all species was reviewed and a map with these geographical data is provided. We have discussed both geographical distribution patterns in the light of Morrone's biogeographical areas.

Eight species new to science are described from Thailand and 35 species new to Thailand are recorded. The fauna of Thailand, represented formerly by 12 species is increased to 52 species here. Comments on their distribution are added. Most of the species recorded come from material collected in the mid XXth century and deposited in Museums and from recent collecting surveys.
