ABSTRACT. Abundance and species richness of Heteroptera (Hemiptera) from Parque Estadual do Turvo, southern Brazil: Pentatomoidea. A two-year study was carried out at Parque Estadual do Turvo, Municipality of Derrubadas, southern Brazil, aiming to evaluate the composition, abundance and species richness of Pentatomoidea. Yucumã apresentou uma riqueza estimada significativamente maior do que a trilha do Garcia. Espécies únicas ou representadas por dois indivíduos equivaleram a 44,6% do total de espécies registradas. Adicionalmente, 20 outras espécies/morfoespécies de Pentatomoidea foram obtidas com amostragens qualitativas, que incluíram, além de guarda-chuva entomológico, armadilhas luminosas e inspeção visual. A presença de espécies de pentatomídeos geralmente associadas a cultivos, dominantes nos diferentes períodos, sugere uma influência das culturas adjacentes a esta unidade de conservação. Novos registros de espécies para o Estado do Rio Grande do Sul são fornecidos.

Tussocks of Andropogon bicornis (Poaceae) make up a significant part of the landscape of the rice-growing region of south Brazil. However, little is known about their role in maintaining insect diversity in anthropized regions. We tested the hypothesis that A. bicornis is a hibernation site for Pentatomoidea (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) by analyzing the composition, structure, and diversity of pentatomoid assemblages over the course of a year. A total of 208 tussocks were removed at fortnightly intervals from April 2010 to March 2011. We collected 3,423 pentatomoid specimens belonging to 22 species distributed in 13 genera of three families, Pentatomidae, Scutelleridae, and Thyreocoridae. The most common species was Tibraca limbativentris Stål, the main rice pest in southern Brazil, followed by Oebalus ypsilongriseus (De Geer) and Edessa meditabunda (Fabricius). Abundance and species richness were the lowest in January, February, and March and the highest in July, August, and September. A combination of high species diversity observed during the colder months, including several unrelated to rice, and the absence of immature specimens in the tussocks strengthens the hypothesis that A. bicornis is a hibernation site for pentatomoids in the region.

In this paper, Brachystethus Laporte, 1832 is analyzed cladistically, using 21 characters and 15 taxa, including as outgroups, in a first analysis, the genera Neotibilis Grazia & Barcellos, 1994, Edessa Fabricius, 1803, Olbia Stål, 1862, Peromatus Amyot & Serville, 1843, and Pantochlora Stål, 1870. Further, these edessine genera were included in the ingroup, without any changes in the only resulting cladogram. The monophyly of Brachystethus is supported by four synapomorphies: metasternal carina partially bifurcated, pygophore with blade-like processes, anterior margin of gonocoxites 9 deeply concave medially, and a mesial thickening on gonapophyses 9. Brachystethus shares with Edessa, Olbia, Pantochlora, and Peromatus four synapomorphies: loss of subcallous margin on pronotum, mesosternal carina lower than metasternal carina, phallus with a short vesica, and presence of a beak-like projection on the thickening of vaginal intima. Based on the cladogram, the transferal of Brachystethus to Edessinae is here proposed. Biogeographical analysis has shown congruence between the distributional pattern of the clade formed by B. rubromaculatus Dallas, 1851, B. signoreti Stål, 1872, B. cribrus (Fabricius, 1781), and Brachystethus sp. nov. A, and vicariant events on Neotropical region, in the late Cretaceous.

The eggs and five nymphal instars of Phloea subquadrata Spinola, 1837 are described and illustrated. Three new host plants are registered, and data on the development and biology of the insect are provided and discussed. ABSTRACT. Predatory insects in canopies ofA total of 658 predaceous insects were collected, representing 51 species from ten families and five orders, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Neuroptera, Thysanoptera and Hemiptera. The most abundant species were Camponotus sp. 1 (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) (16.87%) and Coccidophilus sp. (Coleoptera, Coccinellidae) (11.85%). The highest abundance, richness and evenness of predatory insects were recorded in spring, although no significant difference among seasons has been found.

Scutelleridae Leach includes three subfamilies, 25 genera, and almost 100 species in the Neotropics. Both subfamilies Scutellerinae and Elvisurinae are represented by a single genus, and Pachycorinae contains the majority of the species. Neotropical shield bugs are usually dull colored, but polymorphisms and sexual dimorphisms have caused a considerable confusion in their taxonomy. Several genera need revision, and many new taxa are awaiting formal descriptions. Biological and ecological data are scarce, with a few species reported as minor pests.
