De nombreuses représentations trompeuses continuent à peser sur l’exploitation des ouvriers agricoles étrangers en Italie, rendant difficile la compréhension du phénomène et l’intervention sur ses causes réelles. Cet article tente de questionner les principaux lieux communs sur le sujet, en analysant un cas particulièrement éclairant : celui de la communauté Pendjabi de religion sikh employée sur l’Agro Pontino, dans le Latium. Cette étude de cas permet, d’une part, de faire ressortir les conditions d’exploitation systémiques, masquées derrière des mécanismes apparemment légaux ; de l’autre, il révèle que même les individus les plus vulnérables peuvent résister à l’exploitation et revendiquer activement leurs droits.
L'articolo analizza la complessità del fenomeno del grave sfruttamento lavorativo e la sua sistematizzazione organica quale espressione propria del capitalismo con-temporaneo. Assunti i limiti entro cui, nel mondo accademico e nel dibattito pub-blico, si riflette su queste dinamiche, gli autori propongono una nuova definizione del concetto di grave sfruttamento lavorativo, tentando di integrare approcci e sguardi che in letteratura risultano frammentati. Questa definizione è fondata su tre dimensioni: economica, sociale-riproduttiva, ambientale, da considerare in una relazione circolare nella quale le conseguenze dell'una si ripercuotono sulle altre. In questo quadro, la condizione della forza lavoro, soprattutto migrante, si è trasfor-mata in un crocevia sul quale converge un pluralismo regolativo, formale e infor-male, che determina subordinazione e gravi forme di sfruttamento. È un processo che non è circoscrivibile nel solo ambito agricolo, ma diffuso in molteplici settori produttivi, ognuno dei quali con specifiche modalità di funzionamento. La rifles-sione supera dunque la centralità assunta negli anni dal concetto di caporalato per introdurre quella di padronato, dove le responsabilità sono da individuare nella si-stematicità dei fenomeni connessi al grave sfruttamento lavorativo.
